We have a mythology in this country that drawing is a gift. Some people are lucky to be born artists while others will never be able to draw a straight line. We ascribe genius status to those who have this ability. However, drawing is a skill. Like other skills it can be learned and is developed with practice. It is not that people who can draw, draw regularly but that people who draw regularly, can draw. There is no "right way to draw". The most important thing is to just get out there and do it. It will come. If you make two sketches a week you will improve rapidly. One sketch a day and you are there in no time. To inspire you, go to bird-by-bird, an wonderful website by a woman who decided to draw one bird a day. Go back through her sketches and see how quickly she has developed as an observer and artist. You can do it too!
