The fundamentals: essential drawing techniques
September 10, 2014 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm PDT$20
Drawing is not a gift or a talent. It is a skill that everyone can learn. In this workshop we will break down the essential drawing techniques that everyone should know. These methods are easily learned and are used all the time by professional and beginning artists. Learn how to draw straight lines and round circles. Unlock the power of gesture, contour, measured, constructed and negative space drawings. Merge these approaches together to create your own style. Why didn’t anyone tell us this before?

I am recovering from more than 50 years of thinking that I couldn’t improve my drawing because I have no talent. The urge is there, so I have never given up, but the frustration has been enormous. “Make a drawing every day,” said JML in a class last month. Been there, done that, thought I. So, I began to make a drawing every day and some days I didn’t get up from the drawing table until time to go to the dinner table because I was so thrilled with the results. What was different this time? Instead of going around and round in my usual circle of thinking I didn’t “see” or “look” properly, hence my continued failure to improve, I realized that what I had acquired from John Muir Laws were the tools I needed, not to see, but to DRAW what I saw in specific steps with measurable results. This was the missing link, the tools I needed to connect my hand and my eye—and the framework necessary to correct and improve as I work rather than to finish the drawing and realize how unsatisfactory it is. I will admit that I didn’t pay much attention to the description for the first JML class I attended, thinking it might just be more jargon that would lead nowhere. After the second class yesterday, I realize that the claim that drawing is a skill anyone can learn is true. The secret is a teacher like John Muir Laws.
This means so much to me. Thank you for your love and support. I will do everything I can to help you with your continued development.
I would like to attend the Sept 10 drawing class at Oakland Museum. How may I register?
no registration necessary! See you there.
