How and Why to Keep a Birder’s Field Journal: A 2-part class in partnership with Audubon

March 6 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am PST

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 10:00 am on Saturday, repeating until March 13, 2021

How and Why to Keep a Birder’s Field Journal

Why is it so challenging to learn and remember the plumage, songs, and details of the lives of birds? What if there were simple tricks to help you observe birds more deeply and remember your experiences more vividly? How can you get more out of every birding trip, make stronger memories, and have more fun?

Join John Muir Laws for this 2-class series to learn why and how keeping a birder’s field journal makes you a better birder and makes birding more fun.

Saturday, March 6, 10 – 11:30 AM PST: Birder’s Field Journal FUNdamentals

Learn how you can use words, pictures, and numbers to record your bird observations. Each of these modes of data collection will stretch your brain in different ways—they are fundamentally different and complementary. CLICK HERE FOR THE RECORDING OF THIS CLASS

Saturday, March 13, 10 – 11:30 AM PST: Birder’s Field Journal Pro Tips

Join Jack and his sketching buddy Fiona Gillogly, an avid teen birder and prolific nature journaler, as they explore a playful variety of journaling approaches that open the doors to different aspects of bird life and behavior. They will share pages from their journals, share tips, and demonstrate techniques that will inspire you to record your bird discoveries in new and creative ways.

NOTE: These classes will be recorded and made available for free on John Muir Laws’ blog.

  1. Martha Withers says:

I attended yesterday’s (3/6/21) class on journaling and look forward to next weeks session.

I was wondering if you could say a few words about indexing your journals, or how to find particular entries. Organize journals by subject? Location or venue? By date?

Or if you have already covered this perhaps you could direct me accordingly?

    Thanks so much
    Martha Withers
