SFMS Fungus Fair Field Trip

December 8, 2013 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm PST

Clitocybe glacialis copyGrab your sketchbook and a small folding stool and head on over to the Mycological Society of San Francisco’s Annual Fungus Fair. I love this event and will take advantage of all the collecting that goes into the fair and work on new illustrations for my coastal California field guide. Lets get together and sketch, paint, and take advantage of the cool lectures. The doors open at 10 AM. We will sketch all morning and share our artwork over a potluck lunch at noon. Then back to the main hall to partake in more of the mushroom festivities. We will rendezvous again at 4PM, one hour before closing to share our final drawings. At some point during the day both Kristin Meuser (who created this year’s fair poster) and I will each lead a mushroom sketching workshop (times to be announced).

Here is the official word: In the San Francisco Bay Area, when the first rains tease up the chanterelles and porcini, fungus lovers head to the MSSF Fungus Fair: A Celebration of Wild Mushrooms. The Fair provides information on the uses and abuses of fungi, with displays and exhibits on ecology, toxicology, and cultivation. Arrays of identification tables display locally collected mushrooms. Campsite gourmands learn how to serve up the safe and scrumptious species through identification tutorials, cooking demonstrations, and sales of recipe books, soups, snacks, and fresh edibles. Watch renowned Bay Area chefs prepare dishes like matsutakes & roasted cauliflower in coriander cream or sautéed caramel candy cap pears and dentelles.
