SUMMARY:Nature Journaling in the Hospital
DESCRIPTION:Make two journal pages and call me in the morning. What if nature jouranling could be used to reduce stress in the hospital environment. Join a live conversation with educators around the globe as we learn what happened!\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAs part of an educator’s stewardship project\, Guna Petermane conducts nature journaling sessions at the largest children’s hospital in Riga\, Latvia. Her work focuses on adapting nature journaling methodologies for unconventional\, highly regulated settings. The initial phase of the project involved engaging day patients in the hospital lobby. This requires managing an inconsistent flow of participants who are unfamiliar with the nature journaling practice\, while accommodating various immediate medical constraints\, such as pre-procedure anxiety or short-term physical incapacitations. The clinical setting also necessitates strict adherence to infection control protocols regarding the handling of natural objects and art supplies. \n\n\n\nThe program is being adapted to facilitate regular nature journaling sessions and guided outdoor walks in the hospital garden for psychiatric patients. Her focus remains on the practical application and accessibility of nature education in clinical environments. \n\n\n\nAbout Guna Petermane\n\n\n\nGuna Petermane is a nature journaling educator in training based in Riga\, Latvia. After 15 years in the financial sector\, she changed careers and now works as a guide in a Montessori elementary school. Thankfully\, that is an easy setting to explore the world and converse with the future decision-makers about the challenges and choices of our times. Her current focus involves spreading the word about nature journaling practice while cooperating with the local library\, as well as working on integrating it into clinical environment and adapting educational practices for diverse audiences with specific physical and psychological needs.  \n\n\n\nGuna is also the recipient of 2026 WWF microgrant and is ‘sowing the seeds of nature journaling practice’ among the educators (preschool to middle school). \n\n\n\nShe documents her pedagogical methods and field practices through her Instagram account\, @dabaspiezimes_naturejournaling.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary. If you are new to Zoom or are having trouble with the meeting controls\, please see these notes and suggestions on Zoom Tips for Online Classes with John Muir Laws to help you get more out of the online workshop. When possible I will also make a recording of the workshop and post it on my blog. SUMMARY:Creating complex compositions with Wendy Hollender
DESCRIPTION:Learn the novel and usefull techniques Wendy used to create her beautiful new book The album of Plant Families. This could change the way you think of composition!\n\n\n\n\nToday’s Program: Creating a complex composition with various focal points\n\n\n\nTo create the paintings for the Album of Plant Families Wendy used a technique to create complex compositions right on her final painting. She does this by putting plastic over her paper and laying out different subjects to draw so she can see them together and create focal points and areas of interest with one plant relating to another plant on the page. During this demo she will show you how she does this and do a bit of drawing on the final paper to get things started. Her medium is colored pencil and watercolor together on watercolor paper. \n\n\n\nAbout The Album of Plant Families\n\n\n\nIn vibrant\, full-page illustrations rendered from life\, renowned botanical artist Wendy Hollender depicts the plant families most commonly encountered in the garden and in the wild\, showing the connections between the plants around us and deepening our appreciation of nature. Her own lively text is complemented by guest essays from a variety of distinguished contributors. \n\n\n\nAbout Wendy:\n\n\n\nWendy Hollender is a world-renowned botanical artist and author whose work has been exhibited at the Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew\, the New York Botanical Garden\, and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History\, and published in the New York Times\, O: The Oprah Magazine\, and numerous other outlets. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design\, Hollender is the author of the best-selling books The Joy of Botanical Drawing and Botanical Drawing in Color\, and teaches botanical drawing at the New York Botanical Garden and other beautiful venues around the world. SUMMARY:Forest Therapy\, Nature Journaling & Relationship with Place
DESCRIPTION:From Japan to the California Coast\n\n\n\nJoin speical guest Wendy Figone and John Muir Laws for an exploration of Forest Therapy and how to incorperate it into your programs.. \n\n\n\n\nNature journaling and Forest Therapy share a common root: slowing down to deepen relationship with place. In this session\, Wendy Figone explores how these two practices beautifully complement one another—where they overlap\, where they differ\, and why they are so powerful together. \n\n\n\nDrawing from her experience studying Forest Therapy in Japan (where it is practiced as part of preventive healthcare) and her work certifying Forest Therapy Trails in Santa Cruz\, Wendy shares how Forest Therapy emphasizes sensory immersion and embodied presence\, while nature journaling invites reflection\, curiosity\, and remembering. Together\, they help us return to the same places again and again with greater intimacy and care. \n\n\n\nWendy will also share stories from her monthly “Stress Busters” gatherings at Mavericks\, where gentle somatic movement\, Forest Therapy by the ocean\, and occasional nature journaling invitations support people navigating tech stress and burnout—while deepening relationship with land and sea. \n\n\n\nThis talk is a reflective exploration of attention\, embodiment\, and stewardship\, and how simple practices of noticing can shape how we care for ourselves\, our communities\, and the places we love. \n\n\n\nTime will be reserved for questions and conversation. \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary. If you are new to Zoom or are having trouble with the meeting controls\, please see these notes and suggestions on Zoom Tips for Online Classes with John Muir Laws to help you get more out of the online workshop. SUMMARY:Nature Journaling in South Denali
DESCRIPTION:Join me and Billie Jo Reid on a 6-day/5-night nature journaling retreat in one of the most stunning areas of Alaska: the South Denali. \n\n\n\nThis trip is based in Talkeetna; the tiny\, funky\, town that serves as gateway to Denali’s wilderness. A popular stop on the Alaska Railroad (and the final stop before climbing “the” mountain)\, Talkeetna (pop. 997) attracts visitors from all over to its fun-loving and artistic community. \n\n\n\nHere\, we’ll spend five nights together in the heart of this little village\, at the confluence of the Talkeetna and Susitna Rivers. Tucked just a block away from the town’s walkable Main Street\, we’ll stay in modest and comfortable motel-style rooms\, each with a private bath. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur trip will include outings led by me Billie Jo Reid\, and naturalists at Alaska Nature Guides. The first will be a day in Denali State Park\, a secret gem just south of its better-known “sister”. A wonderland of spectacular sights\, inviting trails\, and pure Alaska nature\, Denali State Park is a favorite of locals\, as it’s actually closer to Denali than the national park. The same stunning scenery\, lush forest\, and abundant wildlife – but without the crowds and buses. With the best trail for Denali views\, sketching opportunities abound…from majestic alpine vistas to delicate wildflowers and berries. \n\n\n\nOur second adventure outdoors will see us checking out bikes from the local gear shop and peddling to Talkeetna Lakes Park. An easy\, flat 6 mile RT ride on a paved path\, we’ll arrive at the trailhead then walk or bike around crystal-clear lakes and lush boreal forest. We’ll look for loons and kingfishers on water\, and moose and bears in the woods. The lush old-growth forest will be alive with songbirds\, berries\, and mushrooms\, and your guide will share stories of how early Athabascan people thrived in this wild land. \n\n\n\nThe third outing will be another day spent in Denali State Park at Byers Lake. Enjoy magnificent views of the lake and surrounding mountains\, and learn about the area’s animal and plant life. We may see nesting trumpeter swans\, loons\, eagles\, or bears foraging for spawning salmon. \n\n\n\nBefore setting out on the day trips above\, on our first morning together we’ll explore the riverbank next to our inn\, a nearby trail leading over the Susitna River\, and perhaps some corners tucked in and around town. After lunch on our own\, there will be an afternoon of open time when attendees will be free to rest or explore on their own. Although we won’t be climbing North America’s highest peak\, there’s adventure to grab hold of within walking distance of our rooms: Denali flight-seeing tours\, heli-hikes\, dog sled rides\, and river fun (fishing and rafting). More activities include Talkeetna’s quaint shops\, artist booths\, museums\, restaurants\, and live music. \n\n\n\nOutings each day take place in remote and rural Alaska\, where travel on foot and bike is at times moderately strenuous. Trails are of variable length (3-6 miles) and involve elevation gains of 100-1100 feet. Trail conditions may include various combinations of pavement\, dirt\, gravel\, water\, mud\, rocks\, boulders\, tree roots\, and limbs and other forest debris\, patches of snow\, uneven footing\, and abrupt changes in terrain. Participants will need to be able to walk or hike unassisted up to 6 miles/1100 feet gain and bicycle 6 miles on a mostly flat and paved path. \n\n\n\nRound trip travel Anchorage <—> Talkeetna: there are a few ways to arrive at the retreat\, but we’re recommending the Alaska Railroad. The trip takes under 3 hours and arrives in TKA at 11am and departs for ANC just after 5pm. Participants traveling the railroad will have time to visit and sketch from rail cars! Storage for luggage is available on either end to facilitate check in and check out of the inn. \n\n\n\nCost and Return Policy\n\n\n\nThe trip cost $3695 per person. A bespoke group trip to rural Alaska is no casual endeavor. Our cancellation policy offers as much flexibility and security as is possible for all. A non-refundable deposit of $700 is required to reserve your spot with the balance of trip fees paid in equal installments over time. Trip fees are refundable (minus deposit) per this schedule: \n\n\n\n120+ days before departure: 100% refund \n\n\n\n91-119 days before departure 50% refund \n\n\n\n61-90 days before departure 25% refund \n\n\n\nWithin 60 days before departure 0% refund \n\n\n\nThe deposit is non-refundable unless we (either attendee or organizer) can transfer your spot to another person. It is for this reason we suggest trip insurance to cover you\, your things\, and your experience. \n\n\n\nIf you’re passionate about nature and art\, and curious about Alaska\, this is the summer trip you won’t want to miss – leading right up to SOLSTICE. With almost 24 hours of daylight each day\, there will be time for everything: connecting with nature in a still-wild place\, embarking on adventures in the Upper Susitna watershed\, seeing small-town life in Alaska\, and sharing stories fireside next to the river. \n\n\n\nOther Expenses\n\n\n\n\n30 day evacuation insurance with LifeMed Alaska \n\n\n\nTravel insurnace\n\n\n\nTransportation to Talketna.\n\n\n\nLunch on the first day (all other meals covered)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease share if you like it!\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n More\n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:How to pay yourself without guessing
DESCRIPTION:A lot of service providers avoid paying themselves consistently because their system doesn’t make it clear what’s safe to take. We’ll look at why paying yourself feels hard and what helps make it feel calmer and more consistent.\n\n\n\n\nToday we meet Aneisha Velazquez\, a former interpreter who now translates numbers instead of words. She helps neurodivergent-led microbusinesses understand\, organize\, and fix how money moves through their business so they can make confident decisions and work the way they actually want to. I think she can help us think about money in ways to make our work sustainable. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Aneisha and her work. When possible I will also make a recording of the workshop and post it on my blog. I look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\nAneisha is offering this workshop to us at no charge. We are very grateful. If you are able\, please consider making a donation to support her work. You can donate here. \n\n\n\nNOTE: Start time is 12 PM Pacific\, 1 PM Mountain\, 2 PM Central\, 3 PM Eastern Time \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease share if you like it!\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n More\n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print
