SUMMARY:Drawing and Painting Songbirds: A Naturalist’s Approach to Art and Observation
DESCRIPTION:This class will focus on the details of drawing songbirds\, from warblers\, to sparrows. \n\n\n\nThe class runs five weeks from October 22 to November 19 \n\n\n\nImagine observing and drawing a bird through the eyes of a scientist and an artist at the same time: every detail tells a story of anatomy and vitality. Led by educator and bird artist John Muir Laws\, author of The Laws Guide to Drawing Birds\, this introductory course blends scientific knowledge and artistic technique to create a rich learning experience for artists and bird lovers alike. You’ll study anatomy\, proportion\, and gesture\, then apply those insights through guided lessons—sprinkled with Laws’s signature enthusiasm and humor—in pencil\, colored pencil\, and watercolor. Drawing on four decades of experience\, Laws will share methods for drawing songbirds quickly and accurately\, whether in the studio or in the field. This course will sharpen your perception\, deepen your attention\, and transform the simple act of looking into an experience of wonder and connection with the natural world. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease share if you like it!\n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n More\n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print

SUMMARY:Nature Journaling and Nonviolent Communication
DESCRIPTION:Join a conversation with Rebecca Rolnick to explore how can our nature journaling teaching practice be informed by non-violent communication?\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAbout Rebecca\n\n\n\nRebecca Rolnick is from the forests\, lakes\, and hills around Syracuse NY\, which she acknowledges are the ancestral unceded lands of Onondaga Nation. As a nature journal teacher and nature connection mentor\, she is on a path of relearning how to live in reciprocal relationship with our “more-than-human” kin. Queer\, neurodivergent\, and chronically ill\, she is passionate about creating nature connection experiences that help all people feel a sense of belonging and interconnection with the web of life\, where each person can be celebrated for the gifts they have to share with their community. \n\n\n\nRebecca graduated from SUNY-ESF (2019) with a B.S. in Conservation Biology and a minor in Environmental Writing and Rhetoric. She is a National Geographic Certified Educator and a Field Notebook mentor for the American Birding Association’s Young Birder of the Year program. She is the creator of Nature Journaling for Ecological Re-STORY-ation and Nature Journal Writing Workshop Wednesdays. In 2021 she received an Honor Roll Award from the Izaak Walton League for her work leading the CNY Young Naturalists program. \n\n\n\nCome along with her on the adventure:www.rebeccarolnick.comhttps://nature-connection-with-rebecca.kit.com/profilehttps://www.instagram.com/habitat_restoryation/ \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. SUMMARY:Paleoart and nature journaling: how time travel with a notebook
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to paint the past with Laura Cunningham.\n\n\n\n\nMeet Laura Cunningham and learn how she recreates ancient landscapes in oil paintings. She will explain and demonstrate how she researches and creates a landscape oil painting that reconstructs the past. She uses nature journaling\, field sketching\, drawing rough sketches\, shadow studies\, color studies\, perspective studies\, and more to finally gather together to form a complex painting in the studio. How is imagination needed to create past life and paleoart illustrations\, based on detailed studies of the natural world? She will show a bunch of notebooks\, field sketches\, and art studies that she uses to put together a landscape scene filled with animals and plants. \n\n\n\nAbout Laura\n\n\n\nLaura Cunningham grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and studied Paleontology at UC Berkeley\, and scientific illustration at UC Santa Cruz in 1991. She went on to work in the field of wildlife biology around California before moving to the field of conservation biology. She is self-taught in art and currently is working on paleoart commissions for museums.
