SUMMARY:Field Sketching in the Range of Light (five day workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a week of sketching\, art instruction and nature study to jump-start you in keeping your own nature/travel journal or re-inspire you to pick up your sketchbook again. We will examine different ways of keeping journals and develop habits to keep you actively sketching. The week will also include mini workshops on illustrating landscapes\, plants\, (including wildflowers!) and using watercolor or colored pencils in the field. Jack will also give technique lectures and demonstrations on drawing birds and mammals. Learn how to paint a five-minute landscape and an animal on the move! You will hike and explore throughout the Sierra Buttes drawing rocks\, water and wildflowers and discover make fast field sketches of birds in the Sierra Valley\, the Serengeti of the Sierra. You will come away with a journal full of recorded experiences and inspiration and motivation to continue on your own. This class is open to all experience levels. \nPlan to arrive at the Sierra Nevada Field Campus on Sunday. We will get acquainted that evening\, but the class will begin at 7:30 AM on Monday. The week’s activities will be flexible to take advantage of some of the best viewing opportunities but in general each day will be spent in the field\, with time to relax at lunch\, and returning to the field campus by dinner. Throughout the week we will learn tricks and techniques to help sketch birds\, flowers and more both in the field and in evening workshops. Walks will be generally short but could range up to 3 miles over moderately rough terrain. The class will end Friday afternoon. \nRegistration opens in April.

SUMMARY:Thinking Like A Naturalist (five day workshop)
DESCRIPTION:“You have to learn it from the hills and the ants and the weeds and things like that. They do the teaching around here.” Byrd Baylor \nRise early to catch the dawn chorus. Crouch low to watch an ant slip underground. Question the clear night sky. Read the stories of river rocks. Stumble on questions and fall into answers. In one week\, learn to see more\, be more curious\, and have more fun in nature than ever before. Through journaling techniques\, scientific inquiry\, and field study we will unlock the methods that naturalists use to explore the world and train our minds to be more curious. We’ll step beyond just looking; our observations and will lead to discovery in every tree\, bird\, cloud\, or insect. Field journaling\, field science methods\, \, and exploration will provide the foundation of our work and will enable us to see more\, remember what we saw\, and make meaning of our experiences. We will add to our naturalist toolkits through simple drawing techniques and writing exercises. Evenings spent reflecting on the words and wisdom of inspiring naturalists will help us to create a community of wonderers and wanderers. Enter ready to be amazed and leave ready to dive into the world and watch it open before you. \nPlan to arrive at the Sierra Nevada Field Campus on Sunday. SUMMARY:Drawing and Painting Sierra Birds
DESCRIPTION:How can you draw birds that move or even fly away? With a combination of understanding bird structure\, knowing where to look when you see the bird\, and a simple shorthand to get down the basics\, anyone can quickly create accurate bird sketches in the field. Come learn the secrets first hand in the grand classroom of the Sierra Nevada. With a combination of indoor illustrated lessons and fieldwork\, learn the basics of bird anatomy and how clumps of feathers ruffle\, pile and unfold. Learn the basic shapes and methods for capturing the form and movement of songbirds\, shorebirds\, waterfowl\, and raptors. We will look closely at birds in flight and foreshortening wings. and tricks to quickly draw birds in the field and avoid anatomical pitfalls that creep into many bird drawings. Understand which critical details to check when you see a bird and master the one minute gesture sketch. Learn techniques for detailed drawings of heads\, wings\, and feet even after the bird has flown.
