SUMMARY:A Bird A Day
DESCRIPTION:What would happen if you drew one bird each day for a year?\n\n\n\n\nJoin John Muir Laws in conversation with nature journaler and conservation leader Anne Chadwick as she wraps up a full year of drawing a bird a day. Why set a goal like this? Lessons learned? Progress made? How can this help build community and advance conservation? What’s next?   \n\n\n\nAuthor\, illustrator\, and photographer Anne Chadwick splits her time between Sebastopol\, California\, and Vancouver\, British Columbia. She is a leader in several organizations devoted to protecting the environment and advancing art and science. Anne’s mantra of “curiosity\, compassion\, and connection” guides her nature journaling and conservation work. She’s spent 16 years as a volunteer leader of the Truckee Donner Land Trust and Point Blue Conservation Science. As owner of a 140-acre ranch in California’s Sierra Valley\, Anne negotiated a conservation easement with the Feather River Land Trust to extinguish development rights in perpetuity. In 2014\, her ranch pioneered the “Learning Landscapes” program\, which brings school children outdoors to study wildlife\, farming\, riparian habitat\, stream biology\, bird migration\, nature journaling\, and more. Check out this 2-minute video about the Loyalton Learning Landscapes. \n\n\n\n All ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary. \n\n\n\nSuggested donation: $20. Your donation helps support me and my family. DESCRIPTION:Join a live discussion with Emilie Lygren and John Muir Laws about poetry\, process\, and our relationship with nature.\n\n\n\n\nJoin John Muir Laws and poet/author Emilie Lygren for a discussion of her new book of poetry. Her poems have appeared in over twenty literary journals and anthologies\, and her first book of poetry\, What We Were Born For\, was selected as the Poetry Foundation’s monthly book pick in 2022. Currently\, Emilie is a professor of creative writing\, a poet in the schools\, and at work on an anthology of poems on mental health for teens. SUMMARY:Drawing Birds from Photographs
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to draw birds from photographs and get access to an amazing new archive of bird reference photos!\n\n\n\n\nJoin John Muir Laws and special guest Peter Hart to explore how to better use photographs to inform bird illustrations. We will use Peter’s photo collection to sample birds and build an original drawing. Peter encourages artists to use his work as reference in their drawings. Let’s meet the photographer behind the collection. \n\n\n\nMeet Peter E. Hart\n\n\n\nPeter slouched out of a high tech career and into birding about 20 years ago\, thereby earning the label of  “Late adult onset birder”. In 2020\, when the full impact of COVID became evident\, he and his wife\, Diane\, needed a new project that got them out of the house and kept them away from people.  He followed Diane’s thought leadership\, and started a project to create a photographic record of the avifauna found on lands that have been protected to preserve habitat and to enable public access. This ongoing project has produced their archival website\, Birds of Protected Lands.  It currently holds 4\,800 of Peter’s photos\, representing 250 species from 54 avian families.  The photos were taken at some 75 locations\, almost all in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary. \n\n\n\nSuggested donation: $20. Your donation helps support me and my family. SUMMARY:Illustrating Sierra Nature: Snow Fleas and Chickadees
DESCRIPTION:Join John Muir Laws\, Author Eve Quesnel\, and illustrator and nature journaler Anne Chadwick for a discussion of the process of writing and illustrating Snow Fleas and Chickadees. We will explore the creative process as well as amazing natural history stories.\n\n\n\n\nJoin Author Eve Quesnel and Illustrator Anne Chadwick in a conversation with John Muir Laws to explore the writing and illustration processes that created this new book.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Book \n\n\n\nIn Snow Fleas and Chickadees\, Eve Quesnel invites readers to join her on strolls through the forest surrounding her neighborhood in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Lake Tahoe. The book serves as an extended field guide and natural history reference for residents of the region and those visiting and exploring the Sierra. Through her writing\, the author shares personal narratives and information gleaned from experts in the field\, including biologists\, ornithologists\, and foresters. Each of the book’s twenty-one essays begins with a detailed black-and-white drawing by illustrator Anne Chadwick that provides a backdrop for the vignettes that follow. \n\n\n\nQuesnel embraces the notion that to simply walk in one’s neighborhood is to familiarize oneself with the local flora and fauna\, drawing attention to everyday things too often neglected. She argues that we can be complacent with what surrounds us\, but with careful observation and research\, we become acutely aware — and in awe of —nature’s everyday activities. \n\n\n\nAbout our Guests \n\n\n\nEve Quesnel has written articles centered on her observations through a storytelling and educational approach for more than two decades. She holds an MA in literature and the environment from the University of Nevada\, Reno\, and is an active columnist for Truckee-Tahoe’s local newspaper\, Moonshine Ink. She is also the coeditor of The Biosphere and Bioregion: Essential Writings of Peter Berg. She lives in Truckee\, California.  \n\n\n\nAnne Chadwick\, an avid member of the Nature Journaling Community\, is an author\, illustrator\, and photographer. She is a leader in several organizations devoted to protecting the environment and advancing the arts\, including serving as board chair of Point Blue ConservationScience. Anne splits her time between Sebastopol\, California\, and Vancouver\, British Columbia. \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary. \n\n\n\nSuggested donation: $20. Your donation helps support me and my family. DESCRIPTION:Learn why to love beavers and how to draw them with John Muir Laws and special guest Heidi Perryman.\n\n\n\n\nJoin John Muir Laws and Heidi Perryman as we explore beaver conservation\, why beavers are important parts of ecosystems and how to draw these amazing creatures. \n\n\n\nHeidi Perryman\, Ph.D.\, is a child psychologist who became an accidental beaver advocate when beavers moved into her hometown in 2006. She served on the beaver subcommittee to help the city decide how to respond\, Then  started the organization “Worth A Dam” to coordinate solutions and educate others about their value in the watershed. She has been particularly interested in the way that the beavers’ struggle has connected residents more closely to their environment\, to their city government and to each other. \n\n\n\nThis year\, Wolrth A Dam will hold its sixteenth beaver festival – an annual event that has grown to be one of the largest celebrations of urban wildlife in the state. California has come a long way in learning why beavers matter and how to live with them.  Heidi is happy that Martinez could be an important part of that process. \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. SUMMARY:Underwater Nature Journaling!
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to nature journal underwater with simple and easily accessible equipment. \n\n\n\n\nJoin Mandy Teernstra and John Muir Laws as we explore how to nature journal underwater! This will change the way you snorkel forever. All ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary. \n\n\n\nAbout our guest\n\n\n\nMy name is Mandy Teernstra. I live in the Netherlands. I am 63 years old and have been retired since the beginning of 2024. After being an intensive care nurse\, I joined the police in 1988. I worked in uniform for a few years. Later I became a detective and worked in the departments of organized crime\, homicide\, and vice squad. In my spare time\, I practice diving. I have been diving for more than 30 years. For the last 10 years\, I have also been a cave and wreck diver. Since my retirement\, I have started to enjoy nature more. I came into contact with nature journaling. One day I drew an eel underwater and showed it to my drawing coach. As a diver\, I was already used to being able to write and draw underwater. I also posted the drawing on Facebook. I noticed that people were very enthusiastic about it. I could find little information though about nature journaling in or under water. But this world needs our attention. So I decided to experiment with snorkeling and drawing. I went to Lanzarote for 3 weeks. In the Netherlands\, it was too cold to snorkel. I chose snorkeling because I want drawing the underwater world to be accessible to many people. I have noticed that it is very doable and does not have to be expensive. And there is so much to marvel at underwater. I would like to share that! \n\n\n\nMy motto is: \n\n\n\nLook with your eyesLeave nothing but bubbles\,Take only memories \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary. \n\n\n\nSuggested donation: $20. Your donation helps support me and my family. SUMMARY:Artivism for African Penguins
DESCRIPTION:How can we use our nature journals for activism and conservation? \n\n\n\n\nJoin John Muir Laws\, Nature Journal South Africa (NJSA)\, and Dr. Katta Ludynia\, Research Manager at SANCCOB (Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) to learn about African Penguins and how to use our nature journals as tools for artivism for their conservation. Oh yes\, there are penguins in Africa\, now. But they are one step away from effective extinction in the wild – predicted by 2035 – if nothing is done to improve their situation!  \n\n\n\nWe will learn ways to use our nature journals for artivism\, as a tool to understand what needs to be done\, to develop emotional and social connections with African penguins\, their ecosystems\, and guardians\, to be motivated to do those things\, and to encourage others\, including those in authority\, to take the necessary actions. This session will explore effective tools to communicate messages\, including how to draw these charismatic beings. All ages and experience levels are welcome. SUMMARY:Draw your Spark Bird!
DESCRIPTION:Share and draw your spark bird! \n\n\n\n\nCome share your story with The Spark Bird Project\, an ongoing community science initiative designed to gather\, share\, and study the stories of people’s passion for birds! Gather with fellow bird enthusiasts to learn more about TSBP\, swap stories\, and hear what we are learning from spark birders so far. John Muir Laws will then walk us through the process of drawing his spark brid\, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet. The Spark Bird Project is an ongoing community science initiative designed to gather\, share\, and study the stories of people’s passion for birds while gaining scientific insights into a critical piece in the ecology of birds: birders themselves. The Spark Bird Project leverages the tools of social science to study spark bird stories\, with research findings going directly back to community partners to inform their efforts towards engaging people in birding. The knowledge gained from The Spark Bird Project helps to craft inclusive experiences that can facilitate spark bird moments for the benefit of the birding community\, the new birder\, the economy\, and – most importantly – the birds and our world! By understanding what hooks and sustains birders\, The Spark Bird Project helps grow the constituency of individuals creatively working to conserve and protect our planet. The Spark Bird Project also helps birders better understand each other by sharing spark bird stories publicly at https://www.spark-bird.org/stories and\, soon\, through The Spark Bird Podcast launching in 2024 and a Field Guide to Spark Birds in 2025/2026. \n\n\n\nAbout our Guest\n\n\n\n Jenn Lodi-Smith\, Ph.D.\, is a Professor of Psychology at Canisius University. She is a personality developmental psychologist who uses mixed methods research to study identity development over time. She is currently a scholar-in-residence with the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. She serves on the executive board for the Association for Research in Personality\, as associate editor of the Journal of Personality\, is a board member for the Friends of Reinstein Woods\, and mentors the Western New York Young Birders Club. Her spark birds are her kiddos who helped her notice birds and then fall in love with birding. Since then\, she has had transformative moments with a fledgling Great Horned Owl\, flocks of Atlantic Puffins\, a friendly Black-throated Green Warbler\, and a fishing Barred Owl! \n\n\n\n All ages and experience levels are welcome.
