SUMMARY:Slithery Subjects— Drawing Desert Reptiles
DESCRIPTION:Learn the art of sketching our desert reptiles while studying their physiology and natural history.  \nJohn Muir “Jack” Laws is one of the world’s most widely known teachers of nature journaling. His approach emphasizes the growth mindset—that anyone can learn to draw and sketch in their field notebooks and journals—while he imparts not only sketching tips and tools but also an infectious joy in nature and its creatures. By the end of class\, you will have new skills in drawing live animals you can use in your field notebooks and nature journals. \nWe’ll host a video stream of live reptiles with Tumamoc’s Robert Villa\, who is also president of the Tucson Herpetological Society. Beto will introduce you to a rosy boa\, a desert tortoise\, and a Gila monster who will model while you learn to sketch. \nRegister Here \nSuggested Supplies:\n\nPencil (any will do) and kneaded or white eraser\nNon-photo blue pencil by Prismacolor\nPen and notebook or journal\n\nNote: the start time shown on the registration page shows 4:00 pm. This is in Mountain Standard Time. The start time on my site is adjusted for Pacific Time.

SUMMARY:Journaling Fire and Its Aftermath
DESCRIPTION:Our nature journals are an important tool to help us understand the wildfires growing ever larger and more intense across the world these past few years. Learn how to develop a deeper understanding of fire’s place in the natural world in this discussion with John Muir Laws and Robin Carlson. We will explore techniques for drawing fire in our journals while learning about controlled burns for habitat management and cultural renewal\, and then we’ll follow along as one natural area recovers from a major wildfire five years ago. On this journey\, we will discuss how habitats respond to fire in healthy fire regimes and how this might change as fires become more frequent.\n\nClick Here to Join the Zoom Workshop! \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary\, This live workshop can hold 500 people and is open to everyone on a first come basis. SUMMARY:Out of the mud... How to draw and paint the Sacred Lotus
DESCRIPTION:The curving petals of a lotus flower present an interesting challenge to the artist. Each petal has a slightly different curve\, some smooth\, some with a keel or ridge. You see each petal from a different angle\, here a view into the interior\, there the outside of the petal. The color pattern is a mixture of smooth blends from pink to white and fine crisp lines. Finally the color itself is a luminous clear pink. How do you mix this color and how to you prevent the color from getting\, well\, muddy? By studying the lotus you will gain insight into solving many subtle drawing challenges. \nClick Here to Join the Zoom Workshop! \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary\, This live workshop can hold 500 people and is open to everyone on a first come basis. DESCRIPTION:Keeping a nature journal is one of the best ways to improve your birding skills. While online platforms such as ebird help you sort and manage your species lists while contributing to citizen science\, they can not help you see more deeply and remember your experience more vividly. Bring a pencil and paper and be ready to practice.\nClick here to join the meeting.

SUMMARY:Orcas! Art and Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Join John Muir Laws and Jenny Atkinson from The Whale Museum. In this workshop\, you will learn about the amazing lifestyles of resident orca\, including conservation and what we can do to protect the whales.  You will also learn how to draw orca as they breach\, breathe\, spyhop\, and wave their tails. \nLocated in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island\, WA state\, The Whale Museum opened to the public in July of 1979. It is the first museum in the country devoted to a living species in the wild. The charismatic megafauna we focus on the most is the orca\, specifically the Southern Resident Community of Orcas\, a population listed as endangered in the US and Canada (their range extends from Monterey\, CA to SE Alaska and the entire Salish Sea\, the inland waters of BC and WA). The museum’s mission is to promote stewardship of whales and the Salish Sea ecosystem through education & research. They are a small museum\, with a big mission! A private non-profit organization with an Exhibit Hall\, in-house and outreach education\, as well as a variety of research programs. \nThis live workshop can hold 500 people. I will also make a recording of the workshop and post it on my blog. All ages and experience levels are welcome. I look forward to seeing you there! \nClick Here to Join the Zoom Workshop! \nThe Whale Museum is facing financial hardship during the COVID epidemic. I encourage you to donate to support the museum. If you are not able to donate at this time\, no problem–please continue to enjoy the classes and find another way to pay it forward in your community with acts of kindness and service. SUMMARY:Online Conversation with Amy Tan
DESCRIPTION:I enjoyed a wonderful conversation on Sunday\, July 19\, with bestselling author and avid nature journaler\, Amy Tan. You can watch a video archive of our talk by registering here and then searching the archive for our event. \nJoin me online on Sunday\, July 19\, at 4pm PDT for a FREE conversation with bestselling author and avid nature journaler\, Amy Tan (shown in this photo from the 2019 Wild Wonder Nature Journaling Conference). Amy began nature journaling five years ago and since then has put in thousands of pencil miles in drawings and observations. She is a frequent contributor to the Nature Journal Club Facebook page (under the name Enmei Tan)\, where she shares drawings and pages from her “Backyard Chronicles\,” a journal where she records observations about and drawings of the birds (and other visitors) at her backyard feeders. I was so honored when she agreed to write the foreword to my latest book\, How to Teach Nature Journaling (coauthored with Emilie Lygren). I am very much looking forward to this conversation! This event is part of a speaker series called Conversations with Authors hosted by Book Passage\, a beloved independent bookstore that has hosted events for more than four decades in the San Franciso Bay Area. The event is free but requires registration. \nSee more details on the event.\nRegister for the free series.
