SUMMARY:Let's play with Numbers!
DESCRIPTION:What are your best moves for teaching students how to incorperate numbers in thier journals?\n\n\n\n\nLet’s share our quantification tool kits. \n\n\n\nWhat are your experiences in your nature journaling classes with numbers? What feedback do you get from your students when you tell them\, that they „should“ or could use numbers\, too\, not only words and pictures? \n\n\n\nWhat are your personal experiences with using numbers in your own jorunals? Do you feel different when using numbers than when using pictures or words? Do the use of numbers changes the way how you experience a specific place? \n\n\n\nAre there activities that you did with your students that have a special focus on numbers and that worked quite well? Are there specific activities that you did with students with a special focus on numbers that didn’t worked well? Do you have an idea why? \n\n\n\nHow do you react\, when students tell you\, that they do not feel “comfortable“ with numbers and that they find it difficult to use numbers in their journals? \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary. If you are new to Zoom or are having trouble with the meeting controls\, please see these notes and suggestions on Zoom Tips for Online Classes with John Muir Laws to help you get more out of the online workshop. When possible I will also make a recording of the workshop and post it on my blog. I look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\nNOTE: Start time is 12 PM Pacific\, 1 PM Mountain\, 2 PM Central\, 3 PM Eastern Time

SUMMARY:Newsletters and Naturescapes
DESCRIPTION:How can newsletters be used to grow your community or business. How can we use long form video scenes to practice and teach nature journaling for particiapnts with limited access to natural landscapes.\n\n\n\n\nJoin naturalist David Lukas and me for a discussion about how to use newsletters to share content and build community. Lucas uses newsletters to share nature observations and stories\, along with photographs\, to help him make a living\, but newsletters could just as easily be used to meet any objective\, including sharing journal pages for fun or building a following for a group. Lucas explores how newsletters will motivate you to create content and give you a place to share your content. We will also look at how his naturescape videos can be used to teach and practice nature journaling online. \n\n\n\nDavid Lukas is a well-known naturalist and author who has studied and written extensively about the natural history and birds of the Sierra Nevada. He has also led thousands of natural history tours\, classes\, workshops\, and presentations. David’s most recent project is producing a weekly nature newsletter at www.lukasguides.com. \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary. SUMMARY:Nature Journaling in the Hospital
DESCRIPTION:Make two journal pages and call me in the morning. What if nature jouranling could be used to reduce stress in the hospital environment. Join a live conversation with educators around the globe as we learn what happened!\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAs part of an educator’s stewardship project\, Guna Petermane conducts nature journaling sessions at the largest children’s hospital in Riga\, Latvia. Her work focuses on adapting nature journaling methodologies for unconventional\, highly regulated settings. The initial phase of the project involved engaging day patients in the hospital lobby. This requires managing an inconsistent flow of participants who are unfamiliar with the nature journaling practice\, while accommodating various immediate medical constraints\, such as pre-procedure anxiety or short-term physical incapacitations. The clinical setting also necessitates strict adherence to infection control protocols regarding the handling of natural objects and art supplies. \n\n\n\nThe program is being adapted to facilitate regular nature journaling sessions and guided outdoor walks in the hospital garden for psychiatric patients. Her focus remains on the practical application and accessibility of nature education in clinical environments. \n\n\n\nAbout Guna Petermane\n\n\n\nGuna Petermane is a nature journaling educator in training based in Riga\, Latvia. After 15 years in the financial sector\, she changed careers and now works as a guide in a Montessori elementary school. Thankfully\, that is an easy setting to explore the world and converse with the future decision-makers about the challenges and choices of our times. Her current focus involves spreading the word about nature journaling practice while cooperating with the local library\, as well as working on integrating it into clinical environment and adapting educational practices for diverse audiences with specific physical and psychological needs.  \n\n\n\nGuna is also the recipient of 2026 WWF microgrant and is ‘sowing the seeds of nature journaling practice’ among the educators (preschool to middle school). \n\n\n\nShe documents her pedagogical methods and field practices through her Instagram account\, @dabaspiezimes_naturejournaling.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary. DESCRIPTION:Numbers help ourselves and our students think quantitatively and to see patterns that we otherwise would overlook. What are our best strategies for incorporating numbers into our nature journaling? What considerations do we make to help our students with dyscalcula?\n\n\n\n\nToday we will be joined by Gitana (Zaria) Garofalo who will share some of her experiences and insights as a person with dyscalula. \n\n\n\nHere are some resoruces Zarina thought would be useful to review before the discussion. \n\n\n\nUnderstood.org \n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.understood.org/en/topics/dyscalculia\n\n\n\nhttps://www.understood.org/en/articles/what-is-dyscalculia\n\n\n\nhttps://www.understood.org/en/articles/classroom-accommodations-for-dyscalculia\n\n\n\nhttps://www.understood.org/en/articles/10-multisensory-techniques-for-teaching-math\n\n\n\n\nSharemylesson.com \n\n\n\n\nhttps://sharemylesson.com/blog/what-world-dyscalculia\n\n\n\nhttps://sharemylesson.com/webinars/math-interventions-dyscalculia\n\n\n\n\nAbout Zarina\n\n\n\nGitana (Zaria) Garofalo learned about her dyscalcula as an adult and now seeks to help normalize and positivize the condition.  She has a Master of Arts in Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Seattle University and recently retired from an academic advising career at the University of Washington. In 2025\, she completed a fellowship in Aotearoa New Zealand where she focused on social-group pathways to activate and sustain meaningful human-nature symbiotic relations. Zaria lives in the traditional worlds of the Coast Salish peoples—past\, present\, future—to whom she offers her acknowledgement and gratitude. Also\, she honors the living entities of Land\, Air\, Water\, and beyond-human Life from whom we originate and to whom we are inherently connected and relationally accountable.  Zaria loves contemporary poetry\, walking shelter dogs\, and subalpine hiking.  \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. SUMMARY:Forest Therapy\, Nature Journaling & Relationship with Place
DESCRIPTION:From Japan to the California Coast\n\n\n\nJoin speical guest Wendy Figone and John Muir Laws for an exploration of Forest Therapy and how to incorperate it into your programs.. \n\n\n\n\nNature journaling and Forest Therapy share a common root: slowing down to deepen relationship with place. In this session\, Wendy Figone explores how these two practices beautifully complement one another—where they overlap\, where they differ\, and why they are so powerful together. \n\n\n\nDrawing from her experience studying Forest Therapy in Japan (where it is practiced as part of preventive healthcare) and her work certifying Forest Therapy Trails in Santa Cruz\, Wendy shares how Forest Therapy emphasizes sensory immersion and embodied presence\, while nature journaling invites reflection\, curiosity\, and remembering. Together\, they help us return to the same places again and again with greater intimacy and care. \n\n\n\nWendy will also share stories from her monthly “Stress Busters” gatherings at Mavericks\, where gentle somatic movement\, Forest Therapy by the ocean\, and occasional nature journaling invitations support people navigating tech stress and burnout—while deepening relationship with land and sea. \n\n\n\nThis talk is a reflective exploration of attention\, embodiment\, and stewardship\, and how simple practices of noticing can shape how we care for ourselves\, our communities\, and the places we love. \n\n\n\nTime will be reserved for questions and conversation. \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary. SUMMARY:How to pay yourself without guessing
DESCRIPTION:A lot of service providers avoid paying themselves consistently because their system doesn’t make it clear what’s safe to take. We’ll look at why paying yourself feels hard and what helps make it feel calmer and more consistent.\n\n\n\n\nToday we meet Aneisha Velazquez\, a former interpreter who now translates numbers instead of words. She helps neurodivergent-led microbusinesses understand\, organize\, and fix how money moves through their business so they can make confident decisions and work the way they actually want to. I think she can help us think about money in ways to make our work sustainable. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Aneisha and her work. \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. SUMMARY:Nature Journaling in Hard Times: Illness\, Death\, and Grief
DESCRIPTION:Join Starr Regan DiCiurcio\, Rhonda Roebuck\, and John Muir Laws for an exploration of nature journaling through serious illness\, death\, and grief.  \n\n\n\n\nNATURE JOURNALING IN HARD TIMES: \n\n\n\nILLNESS\, DEATH\, & GRIEF \n\n\n\nJoin Starr Regan DiCiurcio\, Rhonda Roebuck\, and John Muir Laws for an exploration of nature journaling through serious illness\, death\, and grief.  We will explore ways to bring the support of nature journaling to these difficult times faced by us all at some point.  What are the benefits?  What is possible?  How can nature journaling support the many people involved: patients\, family\, friends\, medical professionals\, ministers\, social workers\, volunteers etc.?  How can we reach out through Hospice and other organizations?  What can we learn from one another as we extend our love of nature and nature journaling to those facing these life challenges?  Please join our host\, John Muir Laws\, for a presentation by Starr and Rhonda\, followed by a conversation with all present.  Let us innovate and inspire one another.  \n\n\n\nRhonda Roebuck grew up in the deep South where nature and the outdoors were a big part of her life.  She lived on a street with 12-14 children who spend their summers outside playing games.  Rhonda graduated from the University of Alabama with a Masters in Fine Arts.  She unexpectedly came to teaching art in the second semester of a school year at a middle school. Teaching became her life love.  She has been creating sketchbooks and journals for over 30 years.  Recently she has been teaching Nature Journaling at her local library. \n\n\n\nStarr Regan DiCiurcio is an interfaith minister and avid nature journaler who lives in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York.  She facilitates a small nature journaling group and offers occasional workshops\, including introduction to nature journaling and poetry for your nature journals.  Starr’s latest book is Dwelling in Wonder:  Nature Journaling as a Spiritual Practice. \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary. Their children are spending an average of five to seven hours on screens and mere minutes outside each day. This book is for every family who is desperate to detach from screens and find some fun and engaging family time together. Whether you live in a big city\, in the suburbs\, or out in the country\, Josee Bergeron will help you find creative and simple ways to bring the rhythm of nature into your daily routine\, just beyond your front door. Following the four seasons\, each section contains unique themes and topics to bring families closer to the outdoors in order to improve their mental health and happiness. Bergeron encourages everyone to feel at home in nature and she offers practical ideas for helping you connect with nature through curiosity and relatability. Families can incorporate cultural traditions when interacting with nature and can honor the inherent attributes of the particular land they live on. Whether it’s welcoming spring by weaving a wildflower crown\, celebrating summer by building a bug hotel\, appreciating autumn by preserving leaves in beeswax\, or creating a magical ice wreath in winter\, families will learn how to embrace nature’s seasons and be more in tune with each other and their communities.Learn how to teach Nature Journaling! Join our weekly discussion and idea-sharing for teachers\, homeschool parents\, and other educators interested in teaching nature journaling skills. Each meeting will have a theme. Most of the conversation that day will revolve around this core idea\, but expect interesting side routes and trails. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR: \n\n\n\nJOSÉE BERGERON\, founder of Backwoods Mama\, is a freelance writer\, photographer\, and influencer dedicated to helping parents get outdoors.
