SUMMARY:Forest Bathing and Nature Journaling
DESCRIPTION:Join a live conversation with Dan Webster about integrating Forest Bathing and Nature Journaling.\n\n\n\n\nJoin Jack and Dan as we explore Forest Bathing and Nature Journaling. We have co-led a program in Yosemite National Park and are particularly excited by how synergistic Forest Bathing and Nature Journaling are! Both offer pathways to mindfulness and connection to place and self. Both practices invite us to slow down\, to use our senses\, and to truly engage\, with the natural world. Forest Bathing builds capacity for gentle focus and connection with the more than human world. Leaning into our primary senses and noticing\, without judgment\, all that is around us expands our sense of wonder. In turn\, heightened observation skills propel us down a path of curiosity and awe. Like ‘kids in a candy store’ we discover endless phenomena to capture in our journals. \n\n\n\nAbout Forest Therapy\n\n\n\nForest Therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin Yoku (translated as ‘forest bathing’ – or immersion in the forest environment). Many wonderful benefits are attributed to the practice including boosted immune function\, improved cardiovascular and respiratory health\, attention restoration\, and reduction in stress and depression. \n\n\n\nThe walks are 1.5 – 2.5 hours and are non-strenuous\, usually covering only ¼ – ½ mile. We begin with an introduction to the experience\, a guided sensory awareness exercise\, and then a series of ‘invitations’ for participants to do individually and share after. The walk concludes with a grounding tea ceremony with fresh tea brewed from carefully selected herbs\, expertly harvested nearby (allowing for the chance to literally take in the forest)\, and snacks. \n\n\n\nAbout Dan\n\n\n\nDan began guiding in forests & deserts in college\, guided youth in a wilderness camp in Maine for 23 years\, taught outdoor education for 20+ years\, and has been an active Naturalist-Guide with the Yosemite Conservancy for over a decade. He lives with his wife in Sonora\, where he is also a teacher. Dan has found Forest Bathing as the best holistic experience for allowing people to nurture and deepen their relationships with nature and self. He is a certified guide with the Association for Nature and Forest Therapy. \n\n\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome. No registration is necessary. If you are new to Zoom or are having trouble with the meeting controls\, please see these notes and suggestions on Zoom Tips for Online Classes with John Muir Laws to help you get more out of the online workshop. When possible I will also make a recording of the workshop and post it on my blog. I look forward to seeing you there! \n\n\n\nNOTE: Start time is 12 PM Pacific\, 1 PM Mountain\, 2 PM Central\, 3 PM Eastern Time

SUMMARY:Sandhill Crane Nature Journaling Field Trip with John Muir Laws
DESCRIPTION:Prepare yourself for a primeval experience. Join John Muir Laws\, Kate Rutter\, and the SF Bay Area Nature Journal Club for a field trip to the Sacramento Valley to draw and study the Sandhill Cranes that migrate to the area for the winter. We will meet at the Cosumnes River Preserve Visitor’s Center and explore wetlands through the morning. In the afternoon we will head to Staten Island Road to watch the fly-in of vast numbers of cranes before nightfall. Though the program ends at 4:00 PM\, sunset will be at 4:45 PM\, this is often a magical time with the cranes. Consider leaving yourself a little wiggle room in your schedule should you want to stay and sketch a little more. \nNeed a few tips on drawing cranes before you go? Check out this video and these three blog posts: basic crane lines\, crane anatomy\, and painting cranes in the landscape\,  \nBring your journaling supplies\, a portable stool\, binoculars and spotting scope (if you have one)\, a potluck lunch treat to share and you own bowl and spoon. Dress in layers as it may be cold.  \nThis is a fundraiser for the Wild Wonder Foundation. $25 suggested donation\, no registration necessary. If rain is a possibility\, check this listing on the morning of the event to see if the trip is canceled or diverted to another (dry) location. \nSee map below and here is additional info on directions.

As a scientist\, educator\, and author\, Jack helps people forge a deeper and more personal connection with nature through keeping illustrated nature journals and understanding science. Jack has kept nature journals since he was a child. As a dyslexic\, Jack struggled in school. He found his place and delight in learning through spending time in nature and keeping notebooks of his observations\, discoveries\, and adventures. Trained as a wildlife biologist and scientific illustrator\, he now observed the world with rigorous attention and awe. He looks for mysteries\, plays with ideas\, and seeks connection in all he sees. He has found that attention\, observation\, curiosity\, and creative thinking are not gifts\, but instead are skills that grow with training and deliberate practice. As an educator and author\, Jack shares ways to make these skills a part of everyday life. He is the author and illustrator of several books including The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling (also available in Spanish)\, The Laws Sketchbook\, The Laws Guide to Drawing Birds\, Sierra Birds: a Hiker’s Guide\, Sierra Wildflowers: A Hiker’s Guide\, and The Laws Guide to the Sierra Nevada. He is co-author with Emilie Lygren of How to Teach Nature Journaling. More info. \n\n\n\nRoseann Hanson is one of the organizers of the Wild Wonder Nature Journaling Conference and has taught more than 150 online and in-person nature journaling\, writing\, and field arts classes. Her books Nature Journaling for a Wild Life and Master of Field Arts debuted during COVID and have become popular for their format as eight-week “workshops in a book.” She is a professional naturalist\, author\, and expedition leader who has been keeping science-based nature and field notes journals for 40 years. She studied journalism and ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona\, and has worked in the American Southwest\, Mexico\, and East Africa as a conservationist\, naturalist\, and writer. Roseann enjoys integrating conservation\, science\, outdoor skills\, and cultural awareness into her work. She was named a Fellow of both the Explorers Club in the U.S. and the Royal Geographical Society for her conservation and expedition work. You can find her at http://www.exploringoverland.com/fieldarts    and on social media at https://www.facebook.com/roseannhansonexplore & https://www.instagram.com/roseannhanson  \n\n\n\nRob Wade is a place-based educator working in the Upper Feather River region of California’s northern Sierra Nevada. As the Outdoor Education and Science Coordinator for the Plumas County Office of Education (PCOE) since 1995\, he has designed\, developed and implemented successful and sustainable K-12 programs in the region\, built upon strategic partnership with over 32 agencies and organizations. These partnerships also allowed the 2016 launch of an NGSS K-12 strategy that took outdoor education and stewardship mainstream. Outdoor Core Mountain Kid is a K-12 collaborative that supports every teacher to integrate authentic weekly outdoor learning adventures for every student as part of a year long local theme centered on inquiry and stewardship. Field journaling is a foundational skill and activity for every student and every grade level. Rob has a BS from the University of California-Berkeley in Conservation & Resource Studies and an MA from the School of Education at the University of San Francisco. In addition to his regional work in California\, Rob is a national facilitator and consultant supporting K-12 program development. Rob is the 2017 recipient of the Excellence in Environmental Education Award\, presented by the California Environmental Education Foundation and a 2020 recipient of the Environmental Law Institute’s National Wetland Award.
