SUMMARY:How to use Watercolor Pencils with a Waterbrush (San Francisco)
DESCRIPTION:Watercolor Pencils are a great way to add color to your field sketches. Applying the pencils is intuitive and the waterbrush makes field application easy. However\, watercolor pencils can perform in unexpected ways that can be frustrating. In this workshop\, you will learn how to work with watercolor pencils to get a variety of effects and turn the bugs of the system into a feature. \nLearn how to:\n\nApproach a drawing with an intentional system.\nAdd shadows to a drawing without turning the drawing to mud.\nLayer dry and wet pencil techniques.\nBlend a small set of pencils to get a wide range of colors.\nPredict color and value changes with water application.\n\nMaterials\n\nSketchbook\nA small set of watercolor pencils. I suggest getting the Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencil set of 24. The set costs about $30 which is more expensive than other brands but the quality and color of the pencils are worth it.\nLarge fine-point Pentel Aquash waterbrush.\n\n \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Intentional Curiosity (San Francisco)
DESCRIPTION:“Curiouser and curiouser!” Cried Alice (she was so much surprised\, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English).”\n― Lewis Carroll\, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland\nCuriosity is not a trait you are born with. It is a skill that you can develop and refine with practice. It is more essential than any drawing trick or tool and  can make a nature journal burst to life. You can learn to be more curious. This workshop can revolutionize the way you see\, think\, and journal. So tap into your inner “Elephant’s Child” and we will see you there. \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation. \n

SUMMARY:The Color Purple... Color Theory that Works (San Francisco)
DESCRIPTION:Let’s reinvent the wheel in this hands on color mixing workshop. If you learned that red\, yellow\, and blue are the primary colors you have been sold a bill of goods that is guaranteed to make muddy colors.  Learn a better color triad that will help you easily mix the colors you want when you want em. You don’t have to take my word for it.This will be a hands on workshop. We will mix watercolor\, gouache\, and acrylics\, and play with colored pencils to make our own hues. You will see for yourself what works. \nIn this class we will: \n\ndebunk the red\, yellow\, blue hoax\nlearn why the split palette system adds an unnecessary layer of confusion to color mixing\nexperiment with the cyan\, magenta\, yellow triad  for better color mixing. Mix bright vibrant colors  or make dull subdued colors that specifically match target hues\ntake a look at other useful paints for your watercolor palette\n\nWhat to bring \n\nwaterbrush\, and rag (sock)\,\nyour watercolor set (if you have one). If you are able to add these colors to your palette: Daniel Smith Quinacridone Pink\, Phthalo Blue (green shade)\, Hansa Yellow Light.\nprocess red\, true blue\, and canary yellow prismacolor pencils\n\nNo registration necessary\, $20 suggested donation

SUMMARY:Sandhill Cranes: Using shape\, structure\, and light to draw what you see (San Francisco)
DESCRIPTION:[T]his workshop is not about drawing Sandhill Cranes. It is about how your ability to draw anything improves when you understand what you see and train your eye to capture critical negative shapes\, gestures\,  and angles. We will start with a detailed look “under the hood” of the Sandhill Crane so we all have  a rich understanding of the anatomy and structure. Then we will learn how to make fast gesture lines from moving birds and how to fill these out to completed sketches. We will also explore how to escape from your understanding of what you “should see”  to accept what you do see and get that down on paper. This approach is not just a technique for drawing cranes\, it applies broadly to any subject you may wish to draw \nThis program is free with a $20 suggested donation. No registration necessary. All levels of experience welcome. Bring a journal and pencil. \n

SUMMARY:Splash and scribble: wet watercolor and aquarelle pencils (San Francisco)
DESCRIPTION:Working with wet watercolor and aquarelle will help your journal sketching become more lively and spontaneous. Instead of carefully drawing lines and then coloring them in\, we’ll invert the process\, splashing down loose watercolor and then drawing into it to define shapes. We’ll also explore some special effects you can get with wet-on-wet watercolor. This approach is very forgiving\, allowing you to feel your way gradually into a drawing\, discovering the scene as you build it up. The class will be mostly hands-on\, with demonstrations and a slideshow showing different ways to use this technique. \nBring \n\n– Scraps of whatever good-quality watercolor paper you can lay your hands on\n– Whatever watercolor paints you usually use\n– A waterbrush (or regular brush and a little jar of water)\n– Any water-soluble pencils you already have (also called aquarelle or watercolor pencils.) If you don’t have any\, buy a couple of neutral gray or brown pencils\, one dark and one mid-value.\n\nIf you can’t lay your hands on all of the above\, there will be materials you can borrow. \nThe class will be taught by Laurie Wigham\, recently returned from the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Manchester where she watched some of the world’s best sketchers working this way. Her previous class for the NJC was Making your Nature Journal Sketches Come Alive\, July 2015. \nNo registration necessary\, All experience levels welcome. Suggested donation $20.

SUMMARY:Perspective for Nature Journaling- San Francisco
DESCRIPTION:Special guest lecture with instructor Mark Simmons\nPerspective allows us to create the illusion of three-dimensional space on the flat page. Though it may seem intimidating\, a basic understanding of perspective gives us a bag of tricks that we can use to add a sense of depth and distance to our scenes\, and convincing volume to our animal drawings. This workshop covers a few simple principles that you can apply to give your pictures a three-dimensional feel\, including: parallel lines and how the eye sees them\, drawing simple forms in perspective\, foreshortening\, overlapping foreground and background\, atmospheric perspective\, and understanding and using the horizon line. \nSan Francisco-based artist Mark Simmons specializes in comics\, cartoons\, and storyboards. You can see some of his work at www.ultimatemark.com\, or visit toysdream.blogspot.com for his latest life sketches of cute animals\, construction machines\, and whatnot. \nNo registration required\, all levels of experience welcome. Bring a sketchbooks and pens or pencils. $20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Sketching with Ballpoint Pens
DESCRIPTION:[O]n a recent trip to Rwanda\, I realized that I would fill my sketchbook long before returning home. I usually sketch with soft pencil and leave the opposite page blank so that facing pages will not smear each other. To conserve paper\, I gave up the pencil and started sketching with a ballpoint pen. Within a week I was in love with this new tool and experimenting with ways to get the most out of it. In this workshop I will share what I learned. \n\nDiscover the versatility of ballpoint pens.\nExplore advanced crosshatching techniques.\nLearn what to do when things go wrong with pen. Discover an approach to correcting mistakes or living with the result and moving on.\nWhat do you do when the pen starts to blob and skip?\nExperiment to find the pens that work the best.\n\nRoot through your home and bring all the ballpoints you can find\, even the really cheap ones. We will play with these and find the ones that will work the best for your field sketching. \n$20 suggested donation. \nNo registration required.

SUMMARY:The next step: Making your nature drawings come alive
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be taught by the wonderful nature journaler and teacher Laurie Wigham. You’ve been working hard to make sense of the underlying structures: why a bird’s leg seems to bend backward in the middle or how to get the proportions right when you foreshorten those flower petals. It’s time to set aside all the careful measuring and scientific description and go for capturing the joy: the way the flick of a bird’s tail or a tree’s branches reaching for the sun can break your heart open.\nWe’ll be exploring those semi-mystical artist’s concepts of Gesture and The Mark: how the way your arm moves when stroking a pencil over smooth paper will tell a different story than an ink pen skipping and catching on rough paper. We’ll be looking at ways different artists have done this and then will run through a series of exercises so fast there won’t be time to think or get nervous.\nBring a soft pencil and some rough paper if you’ve got them\, but I will also bring materials for everyone to use. Don’t worry about taking notes: I’ll be posting a link to online Flickr galleries of artwork from the presentation so you can take your time looking through it all later
