SUMMARY:How to use Watercolor Pencils with a Waterbrush (Lafayette)
DESCRIPTION:Watercolor Pencils are a great way to add color to your field sketches. Applying the pencils is intuitive and the waterbrush makes field application easy. However\, watercolor pencils can perform in unexpected ways that can be frustrating. In this workshop\, you will learn how to work with watercolor pencils to get a variety of effects and turn the bugs of the system into a feature. \nLearn how to:\n\nApproach a drawing with an intentional system.\nAdd shadows to a drawing without turning the drawing to mud.\nLayer dry and wet pencil techniques.\nBlend a small set of pencils to get a wide range of colors.\nPredict color and value changes with water application.\n\nMaterials\n\nSketchbook\nA small set of watercolor pencils. I suggest getting the Albrecht Durer Watercolor Pencil set of 24. The set costs about $30 which is more expensive than other brands but the quality and color of the pencils are worth it.\nLarge fine-point Pentel Aquash waterbrush.\n\n \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Doodling Diagrams (Lafayette)
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to doodle some diagrams! This workshop will show you how to make simple drawings of how animals move and more. We’ll watch as animals eat\, walk\, waddle\, hop\, pounce (etc.)\, and figure out how to translate that motion into a simple sketch. We’ll also decode crazy creatures’ limbs\, map out where animals wander\, break down how things work\, create “mystery chain” diagrams\, and more. There’s no need for any knowledge of science or math to try this out–nor to fall in love with it!\nBonus: These are great ways to journal about animals that may be moving too fast or are too far away for detailed\, realistic drawings. Ever yelled at a critter: “why won’t you just sit still for a minute!?” (I have!) After this workshop… you might just enjoy drawing things that move!\n\nThis workshop is being taught by guest artist Amy Schleser\, who creates science explanations for kids as her day job and formerly developed science exhibitions for museums. Check out her work online on Instagram (science.art.amy) or at www.amyschleser.com  \n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:What's in a Sky? (Lafayette)
DESCRIPTION:What kind of blues are in that sky\, and what kind of grays are in those clouds? What’s the one color you never want to put in your sky\, not even in the most lurid sunset? How can you show the sun breaking through the clouds\, when it’s so much brighter than the white of your paper? What happens where the sky touches the land\, and how can you give a sense of sunlight spilling over a landscape? When do you want to precisely indicate what kind of clouds you’re seeing\, and when do you need to alter reality to make a better painting?\n\nAs she did in her class for the Nature Journal Club last year\, Reflections and Other Tricky Things About Water\, Laurie will attempt to answer those and many other questions with a grab bag of painting techniques\, science\, field observations\, solutions from other artists\, and random tips she has accumulated in her 7 years of organizing the SF Sketchers Meetup Group\, teaching watercolor\, and painting skies wherever she sees them.\n\nIn addition to Reflections\, Laurie’s previous classes for the Nature Journal Club were Splash & Scribble and How to Make Your Nature Journal Sketches Come Alive.\n\nBRING\nGraphite pencil and sketchbook to take notes in (cheap paper OK) \nYour current field watercolor setup\, including:\n• Paint palette\n• Waterbrush or other small brush with a compact water container. (Doesn’t need to be sable: synthetic brushes are fine.)\n• rag or paper towel\n• A few scraps of good quality watercolor paper to try out special effects\n\nThere will be art supplies you can borrow if you don’t have any of the above.\n\n\n\n\nOpen to all ages and skill levels. $20 suggested donation

SUMMARY:How to Draw A Forest (Lafayette)
DESCRIPTION:Into the Woods! Just as you do not draw a tree by drawing a lot of leaves\, you do not draw a forest by drawing a lot of trees. Learn how to suggest the feeling of a distant forest\, including the skyline pattern\, edge and texture. We will demonstrate techniques using pencil and watercolor. In addition\, learn how to draw the view from within the forest as you look out through the trunks and get a feeling of the play of light and shadow\, and the tangle of branches. A few simple principles and methods will help you draw what you see without getting lost in the trees or taking hours to complete so you can still make it to grandmother’s house and have time to sketch along the way. \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Reflections and other tricky things about water (Lafayette)

Bring your usual sketching kit and paper to take notes. Watercolor is useful but not essential. \nLaurie Wigham is a painter in San Francisco. SUMMARY:Fast Notes & Quick Sketching With Mark Simmons (Lafayette)
DESCRIPTION:“If it were done when ’tis done\, then ’twere well / It were done quickly” \n— Macbeth\, Act 1\, Scene 7 \nShakespearean tragedies usually don’t involve a lot of nature journaling\, but we’ve all been in situations where there’s some fleeting image or precious information we’d to jot down as quickly as possible. By writing down key points of a lecture or new ideas we discover in the field\, and associating them with drawings and graphics\, we can reinforce what we learn and share it more easily with other people. \nIn this hands-on workshop\, we’ll explore some tricks and techniques for “sketchnoting” and structuring information\, as well as methods for quickly sketching animals\, people\, and other fast-moving targets. We’ll learn how to balance words\, pictures\, and decorative elements to create a record of the time-sensitive moments you want to capture\, and how to manipulate space and time to your advantage! \nPlease bring a journal or sketchbook\, and your drawing tools of choice; extra materials will be provided for you to experiment with. All ages and experience levels welcome. No registration or sign up necessary. $20 suggested donation. \nSan Francisco-based artist Mark Simmons specializes in comics\, cartoons\, and storyboards. You can see some of his work at www.ultimatemark.com\, or visit toysdream.blogspot.com for his latest life sketches of cute animals\, construction machines\, and whatnot.

SUMMARY:Drawing Birds: getting the details (Lafayette)
DESCRIPTION:When the bird lands in front of you\, you must be ready to get the basic form on paper with a few lines. This was the focus of last month’s workshop which you can view here. But what do you do then? Once you have this basic shape you are ready to fill in the details but this is hard if you don’t understand what you are seeing. One of the keys to fast field sketching is to understand the structures and features of whatever you are looking at\, to know what to expect as the typical way a detail will present\,  and to have a shorthand way to get that down on paper in a few strokes. Understanding the details and having a tool kit of techniques to get them on paper will make field sketching easier\, accurate\, and more fun. \n\nHow do bird beaks fit into the head? Where should I look for nuance of shape?\nHow do you draw the eyes?\nWings- this is a biggie\, how do you suggest the detail without getting lost in a wing diagram (which you actually don’t see on most birds).\nHow does the tail attach and how to simplify the shape and angles?\nHow do I indicate feather texture and groups of feathers?\nWhats up with bird feet and how do I draw them?\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  Homeschool friendly. No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.
