SUMMARY:How to Draw A Forest (Lafayette)
DESCRIPTION:Into the Woods! Just as you do not draw a tree by drawing a lot of leaves\, you do not draw a forest by drawing a lot of trees. Learn how to suggest the feeling of a distant forest\, including the skyline pattern\, edge and texture. We will demonstrate techniques using pencil and watercolor. In addition\, learn how to draw the view from within the forest as you look out through the trunks and get a feeling of the play of light and shadow\, and the tangle of branches. A few simple principles and methods will help you draw what you see without getting lost in the trees or taking hours to complete so you can still make it to grandmother’s house and have time to sketch along the way. \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Watercolor ABC's (Lafayette)
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to get started with using watercolor in your field sketches? This is the class for you. In this workshop I assume no background using watercolors and will cover the essentials to get you started\, so that you can quickly and easily apply watercolor to your work. \nIn this workshop you will learn:\n\nHow to set up your field gear.\nHow to mix colors.\nHow to apply paint using glazing\, wash\, graded wash\, and dry brush techniques.\nHow to avoid the top five mistakes that haunt watercolor artists.\n\nWhat to bring:\n\nA small palette. If you already have one you are good to go. If you are just starting\, read this post. It will give you instructions to assemble a great pallet for under $20. Prep the kit as per the instructions before class. You will be happiest if you dispense with the little white pans as described in the post. If you do not want them\, bring them to class and I will repurpose them.\nA large tip Pentel Aquash Waterbrush. Not the medium\, not the small\, the large one. If you have a waterbrush and it is not this one\, go out and spend the $8 to get this brush. It is well worth the trouble. You can buy one here\, but look around\, you may be able to find a better price.\nA cotton sock with the toe cut off. You do not need to cup up a new sock. Use one of those lonely dryer orphans. If you can not find one\, I have a used but clean sock for you.  Now that is generosity!\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Reflections and other tricky things about water (Lafayette)
DESCRIPTION:Why is water so hard to paint? How do you sketch something that’s always moving? Why can you see the bottom of the lake in one spot\, but the reflected sky right next to it? We’ll talk a little about the science\, look at solutions different artists have used\, develop some strategies for analyzing what we’re seeing and do some simple exercises. Bring your usual sketching kit and paper to take notes. Watercolor is useful but not essential. \nLaurie Wigham is a painter in San Francisco. She organizes the SF Sketchers meetup group and teaches sometimes. Her previous classes for the Nature Journal Club were “Splash & Scribble” and  “Making your Nature Journal Sketches Come Alive”. You can see her work on Facebook\, Flickr and Instagram  \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Color Gets All the Credit\, Value Does All the Work (Lafayette)
DESCRIPTION:Want to get more of a pop from your watercolors? Wish they were easier to use? Would you like an adaptable system to help you get your paint down on the paper? \nIt is easy to get wrapped around the axle about accurately matching a color. With practice and work you can learn to match colors with precision. In this workshop you will learn how to mix watercolors to get the colors you want but it does not stop there. The dirty little secret is that exact color matching is not as big a deal as most people think it is. Value\, the difference between light and dark\, is much more important and more easily overlooked. \n\nLearn how to apply watercolor for fast accurate colors.\nDiscover tricks to get a richer value range.\nLearn how to see value in your subject and your drawing.\nGet a bonus gift that you will always keep in your journaling kit.\n\nBring these tools\n\nYour sketchbook\nYour favorite portable watercolor set. If you do not have one\, get a Cotman Pocket Sketcher’s Box and modify it as described in this post. I really recommend doing away with those extra little pans (see post).\nA large\, fine tip\, Pentel Aquash Waterbrush (if you have one).\nA little holiday gift (see below).\n\nHoliday Gift Exchange\nBring a low-cost wrapped item that would be appropriate for another nature journaler. We will exchange gifts with strangers to celebrate our growing community. \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Fast Notes & Quick Sketching With Mark Simmons (Lafayette)
DESCRIPTION:“If it were done when ’tis done\, then ’twere well / It were done quickly” \n— Macbeth\, Act 1\, Scene 7 \nShakespearean tragedies usually don’t involve a lot of nature journaling\, but we’ve all been in situations where there’s some fleeting image or precious information we’d to jot down as quickly as possible. By writing down key points of a lecture or new ideas we discover in the field\, and associating them with drawings and graphics\, we can reinforce what we learn and share it more easily with other people. \nIn this hands-on workshop\, we’ll explore some tricks and techniques for “sketchnoting” and structuring information\, as well as methods for quickly sketching animals\, people\, and other fast-moving targets. We’ll learn how to balance words\, pictures\, and decorative elements to create a record of the time-sensitive moments you want to capture\, and how to manipulate space and time to your advantage! \nPlease bring a journal or sketchbook\, and your drawing tools of choice; extra materials will be provided for you to experiment with. All ages and experience levels welcome. No registration or sign up necessary. $20 suggested donation. \nSan Francisco-based artist Mark Simmons specializes in comics\, cartoons\, and storyboards. You can see some of his work at www.ultimatemark.com\, or visit toysdream.blogspot.com for his latest life sketches of cute animals\, construction machines\, and whatnot.

SUMMARY:Drawing Birds: getting the details (Lafayette)
DESCRIPTION:When the bird lands in front of you\, you must be ready to get the basic form on paper with a few lines. This was the focus of last month’s workshop which you can view here. But what do you do then? Once you have this basic shape you are ready to fill in the details but this is hard if you don’t understand what you are seeing. One of the keys to fast field sketching is to understand the structures and features of whatever you are looking at\, to know what to expect as the typical way a detail will present\,  and to have a shorthand way to get that down on paper in a few strokes. Understanding the details and having a tool kit of techniques to get them on paper will make field sketching easier\, accurate\, and more fun. \n\nHow do bird beaks fit into the head? Where should I look for nuance of shape?\nHow do you draw the eyes?\nWings- this is a biggie\, how do you suggest the detail without getting lost in a wing diagram (which you actually don’t see on most birds).\nHow does the tail attach and how to simplify the shape and angles?\nHow do I indicate feather texture and groups of feathers?\nWhats up with bird feet and how do I draw them?\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  Homeschool friendly. No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.

It is about how your ability to draw anything improves when you understand what you see and train your eye to capture critical negative shapes\, gestures\,  and angles. We will start with a detailed look “under the hood” of the Sandhill Crane so we all have  a rich understanding of the anatomy and structure. Then we will learn how to make fast gesture lines from moving birds and how to fill these out to completed sketches. We will also explore how to escape from your understanding of what you “should see”  to accept what you do see and get that down on paper. This approach is not just a technique for drawing cranes\, it applies broadly to any subject you may wish to draw \nThis program is free with a $20 suggested donation. No registration necessary. All levels of experience welcome. Bring a journal and pencil. \n

SUMMARY:Splash and scribble: wet watercolor and aquarelle pencils (Lafayette)
DESCRIPTION:Working with wet watercolor and aquarelle will help your journal sketching become more lively and spontaneous. Instead of carefully drawing lines and then coloring them in\, we’ll invert the process\, splashing down loose watercolor and then drawing into it to define shapes. We’ll also explore some special effects you can get with wet-on-wet watercolor. This approach is very forgiving\, allowing you to feel your way gradually into a drawing\, discovering the scene as you build it up. The class will be mostly hands-on\, with demonstrations and a slideshow showing different ways to use this technique. \nBring \n\n– Scraps of whatever good-quality watercolor paper you can lay your hands on\n– Whatever watercolor paints you usually use\n– A waterbrush (or regular brush and a little jar of water)\n– Any water-soluble pencils you already have (also called aquarelle or watercolor pencils.) If you don’t have any\, buy a couple of neutral gray or brown pencils\, one dark and one mid-value.\n\nIf you can’t lay your hands on all of the above\, there will be materials you can borrow. \nThe class will be taught by Laurie Wigham\, recently returned from the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Manchester where she watched some of the world’s best sketchers working this way. Her previous class for the NJC was Making your Nature Journal Sketches Come Alive\, July 2015. \nAll experience levels welcome. Suggested donation $20.
