SUMMARY:Pt. Reyes- Marshall Beach Fieldtrip
DESCRIPTION:Badgers\, Bobcats\, and Bunchgrass!\nJoin us in thePt. Reyes National Seashore. along the L Ranch Rd\, where we will seek badgers\, bobcats\, and coyotes which regularly hang out in this area. There is also an amazing relict coastal prairie along the road\, with native bunchgrasses and wildflowers\, which we will study. Short hikes less than a quarter mile\, we will mostly explore near roads from our cars. Prepare to sketch plants\, insects\, birds\, and any mammals we can find. We’ll also go elk-watching at Tomales Point if we have time later in the day. \nSpecial Guest: Laura Cunningham\nWe will be joined by Laura Cunningham who will bring  plein air oil painting supplies to do a demo\, as we draw and/or paint landscapes in this beautiful open upland setting within view of Tomales Bay and the Pacific Ocean.  A local wildlife photographer may be along to show us the hotspots for bobcats and badgers. \nOn this ‘safari”she  will discuss coastal prairie plants\, ecology\, ecological history\, conservation issues\, and the birds and mammals that dwell here. We will have field guides available\, including grass identification guides. \nBring\nA bowl and spoon and a  potluck treat to share for lunch (we will be near the cars at lunch so food can stay in the car while we explore)\, drinks\, sketching and drawing supplies\, notebook\, backpack or carrying bag\, binoculars\, watercolor painting sets\, and oil painting supplies if you have them. Bring any supplies for a day out exploring the coastal prairie and its wildlife. Weather could be cool and foggy. \nDirections\nGoogle’s destination is a bit shy of the trailhead. Continue about 300 more feet to the obvious parking at the end of the road.) From US 101 in Marin County\, exit Sir Francis Drake/San Anselmo. Drive west on Sir Francis Drake about 20 miles\, to the junction with CA 1\, turn right\, drive 0.1 mile\, and then turn left onto Bear Valley Road. After about 2 miles\, Bear Valley Road ends at Sir Francis Drake; turn left. Continue on Sir Francis Drake about 5.5 miles\, and turn right onto Pierce Point Road. Drive about 1.3 miles (just past the Tomales State Park entrance) and turn right onto Duck Cove/Marshall Beach Road. The road starts out narrow and paved\, but soon becomes a wide dirt/gravel road\, with open range cattle roaming about and sometimes sitting on or along the road. Drive about 2.5 miles\, following the brown “parks” signs to the trailhead: go straight at the first junction with a dirt farm road\, then left at the Y. The trailhead is at the end of the road. \nIf rain is forecasted for the day of the field trip\, the trip may be canceled or relocated to an indoor venue.Check the program description Sunday morning before leaving for updates and changes. The program is open to all ages and ability levels. No registration necessary. $20 suggested donation.
