SUMMARY:Drawing Fundamentals: Gesture & Negative Shapes (Cupertino)
DESCRIPTION:Start the Nature Journaling New Year with a look at the most important skills for getting an image on the paper. Using gesture sketching and negative shapes together allows you to block in basic shapes and see fundamental masses. Once you have this down\, the details\, color\, and value can drop onto a framework that has already solved many of the challenges of going from eye to paper. In this workshop you will: \n\nIncrease your drawing speed\nPractice how to start any drawing\nLearn to see negative shapes everywhere\nLoosen up\, get the big picture\, and relax\n\nBring a sketchbook\, pencil\, and non-photo blue pencil (if you have one). \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Color Gets All the Credit\, Value Does All the Work (Cupertino)
DESCRIPTION:Want to get more of a pop from your watercolors? Wish they were easier to use? Would you like an adaptable system to help you get your paint down on the paper? \nIt is easy to get wrapped around the axle about accurately matching a color. With practice and work you can learn to match colors with precision. In this workshop you will learn how to mix watercolors to get the colors you want but it does not stop there. The dirty little secret is that exact color matching is not as big a deal as most people think it is. Value\, the difference between light and dark\, is much more important and more easily overlooked. \n\nLearn how to apply watercolor for fast accurate colors.\nDiscover tricks to get a richer value range.\nLearn how to see value in your subject and your drawing.\nGet a bonus gift that you will always keep in your journaling kit.\n\nBring these tools\n\nYour sketchbook\nYour favorite portable watercolor set. If you do not have one\, get a Cotman Pocket Sketcher’s Box and modify it as described in this post. I really recommend doing away with those extra little pans (see post).\nA large\, fine tip\, Pentel Aquash Waterbrush (if you have one).\nA little holiday gift (see below).\n\nHoliday Gift Exchange\nBring a low-cost wrapped item that would be appropriate for another nature journaler. We will exchange gifts with strangers to celebrate our growing community. \nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Drawing Birds: getting the details (Cupertino)
DESCRIPTION:When the bird lands in front of you\, you must be ready to get the basic form on paper with a few lines. This was the focus of last month’s workshop which you can view here. But what do you do then? Once you have this basic shape you are ready to fill in the details but this is hard if you don’t understand what you are seeing. One of the keys to fast field sketching is to understand the structures and features of whatever you are looking at\, to know what to expect as the typical way a detail will present\,  and to have a shorthand way to get that down on paper in a few strokes. Understanding the details and having a tool kit of techniques to get them on paper will make field sketching easier\, accurate\, and more fun. \n\nHow do bird beaks fit into the head? Where should I look for nuance of shape?\nHow do you draw the eyes?\nWings- this is a biggie\, how do you suggest the detail without getting lost in a wing diagram (which you actually don’t see on most birds).\nHow does the tail attach and how to simplify the shape and angles?\nHow do I indicate feather texture and groups of feathers?\nWhats up with bird feet and how do I draw them?\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  Homeschool friendly. No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Sandhill Cranes: Using shape\, structure\, and light to draw what you see (Cupertino)
DESCRIPTION:[T]his workshop is not about drawing Sandhill Cranes. It is about how your ability to draw anything improves when you understand what you see and train your eye to capture critical negative shapes\, gestures\,  and angles. We will start with a detailed look “under the hood” of the Sandhill Crane so we all have  a rich understanding of the anatomy and structure. Then we will learn how to make fast gesture lines from moving birds and how to fill these out to completed sketches. We will also explore how to escape from your understanding of what you “should see”  to accept what you do see and get that down on paper. This approach is not just a technique for drawing cranes\, it applies broadly to any subject you may wish to draw \nThis program is free with a $20 suggested donation. No registration necessary. All levels of experience welcome. Bring a journal and pencil. \n

SUMMARY:Splash and scribble: wet watercolor and aquarelle pencils (Cupertino)
DESCRIPTION:Working with wet watercolor and aquarelle will help your journal sketching become more lively and spontaneous. Instead of carefully drawing lines and then coloring them in\, we’ll invert the process\, splashing down loose watercolor and then drawing into it to define shapes. We’ll also explore some special effects you can get with wet-on-wet watercolor. This approach is very forgiving\, allowing you to feel your way gradually into a drawing\, discovering the scene as you build it up. The class will be mostly hands-on\, with demonstrations and a slideshow showing different ways to use this technique. \nBring \n\n– Scraps of whatever good-quality watercolor paper you can lay your hands on\n– Whatever watercolor paints you usually use\n– A waterbrush (or regular brush and a little jar of water)\n– Any water-soluble pencils you already have (also called aquarelle or watercolor pencils.) If you don’t have any\, buy a couple of neutral gray or brown pencils\, one dark and one mid-value.\n\nIf you can’t lay your hands on all of the above\, there will be materials you can borrow. \nThe class will be taught by Laurie Wigham\, recently returned from the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Manchester where she watched some of the world’s best sketchers working this way. Her previous class for the NJC was Making your Nature Journal Sketches Come Alive\, July 2015. \nNo registration necessary\, All experience levels welcome. Suggested donation $20.

SUMMARY:Drawing Trees in Pen and Ink: Cupertino
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to draw broadleaf and evergreen trees both from a distance and up close details (leaves\, acorns\, seed pods\, and fruit). In addition to studying details of structure\, we will explore shortcuts to help you get the form on paper and tricks to suggest dimension and volume. \nTwo advantages of drawing in ink are that it reproduces clearly for low cost printing and that it does not smudge and smear in your notebook. \nWe will apply our new tree drawing expertise in the field trip at the end of this month to Lake Merrit where we will draw trees for an upcoming educational brochure being produced for Oakland Parks and Recreation. This pro bono work is one way we can help conservation education with our art.

SUMMARY:Sketching with Ballpoint Pens
DESCRIPTION:[O]n a recent trip to Rwanda\, I realized that I would fill my sketchbook long before returning home. I usually sketch with soft pencil and leave the opposite page blank so that facing pages will not smear each other. To conserve paper\, I gave up the pencil and started sketching with a ballpoint pen. Within a week I was in love with this new tool and experimenting with ways to get the most out of it. In this workshop I will share what I learned. \n\nDiscover the versatility of ballpoint pens.\nExplore advanced crosshatching techniques.\nLearn what to do when things go wrong with pen. Discover an approach to correcting mistakes or living with the result and moving on.\nWhat do you do when the pen starts to blob and skip?\nExperiment to find the pens that work the best.\n\nRoot through your home and bring all the ballpoints you can find\, even the really cheap ones. We will play with these and find the ones that will work the best for your field sketching. \n$20 suggested donation. \nNo registration required.

SUMMARY:Composition
DESCRIPTION:A strong composition is the backbone of a successful drawing. In addition\, creative composition will open alternative ways of seeing a subject and give you new and exciting avenues to explore in your art. Composition is not hard to master and with a few basic principles under your belt you will see a dramatic improvement in your landscapes\, page layouts\, and photography. In this workshop you will learn ways of visualizing and analyzing your artwork that help you create strong compositions in a single drawing or on the fly as you combine elements on a page. Also learn how to do post-hoc composition to fix the layout of a page or a single sketch.

SUMMARY:The next step: Making your nature drawings come alive
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be taught by the wonderful nature journaler and teacher Laurie Wigham. You’ve been working hard to make sense of the underlying structures: why a bird’s leg seems to bend backward in the middle or how to get the proportions right when you foreshorten those flower petals. It’s time to set aside all the careful measuring and scientific description and go for capturing the joy: the way the flick of a bird’s tail or a tree’s branches reaching for the sun can break your heart open.\nWe’ll be exploring those semi-mystical artist’s concepts of Gesture and The Mark: how the way your arm moves when stroking a pencil over smooth paper will tell a different story than an ink pen skipping and catching on rough paper. We’ll be looking at ways different artists have done this and then will run through a series of exercises so fast there won’t be time to think or get nervous.\nBring a soft pencil and some rough paper if you’ve got them\, but I will also bring materials for everyone to use. Don’t worry about taking notes: I’ll be posting a link to online Flickr galleries of artwork from the presentation so you can take your time looking through it all later

SUMMARY:A Rainbow of Colors from Three Primaries
DESCRIPTION:[Y]ou do not need a palette of a million colors if you understand the way colors mix. There is a lot of misinformation and dogma that confuses people when they try to mix colors. If you have ever accidentally mixed dull or muddy colors\, it is not you. Learn how to create a rainbow of vivid hues and precisely match colors with three primaries (cyan\, magenta\, and yellow). Bring your journal\, waterbrush (or watercolor brush with a container of water and rag)\, and a plant or flower to share. Your instructor\, Kristin Meuser\, will provide the paint ($1.00 materials fee). In this hands on workshop\, you will be able to test and experiment to discover for yourself how color mixing really works and learn to avoid the common pitfalls. Say goodbye to mud and hello precise\, lively\, and rich color. \nKristin Meuser is a wonderful nature journaling and watercolor teacher who gives classes throughout the Bay Area and California. Learn more about Kristin and her workshops. \n
