SUMMARY:Sandhill Cranes: Using shape\, structure\, and light to draw what you see (Cupertino)
DESCRIPTION:[T]his workshop is not about drawing Sandhill Cranes. It is about how your ability to draw anything improves when you understand what you see and train your eye to capture critical negative shapes\, gestures\,  and angles. We will start with a detailed look “under the hood” of the Sandhill Crane so we all have  a rich understanding of the anatomy and structure. Then we will learn how to make fast gesture lines from moving birds and how to fill these out to completed sketches. We will also explore how to escape from your understanding of what you “should see”  to accept what you do see and get that down on paper. This approach is not just a technique for drawing cranes\, it applies broadly to any subject you may wish to draw \nThis program is free with a $20 suggested donation. No registration necessary. All levels of experience welcome. Bring a journal and pencil. \n

SUMMARY:Splash and scribble: wet watercolor and aquarelle pencils (Cupertino)
DESCRIPTION:Working with wet watercolor and aquarelle will help your journal sketching become more lively and spontaneous. Instead of carefully drawing lines and then coloring them in\, we’ll invert the process\, splashing down loose watercolor and then drawing into it to define shapes. We’ll also explore some special effects you can get with wet-on-wet watercolor. This approach is very forgiving\, allowing you to feel your way gradually into a drawing\, discovering the scene as you build it up. The class will be mostly hands-on\, with demonstrations and a slideshow showing different ways to use this technique. \nBring \n\n– Scraps of whatever good-quality watercolor paper you can lay your hands on\n– Whatever watercolor paints you usually use\n– A waterbrush (or regular brush and a little jar of water)\n– Any water-soluble pencils you already have (also called aquarelle or watercolor pencils.) If you don’t have any\, buy a couple of neutral gray or brown pencils\, one dark and one mid-value.\n\nIf you can’t lay your hands on all of the above\, there will be materials you can borrow. \nThe class will be taught by Laurie Wigham\, recently returned from the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Manchester where she watched some of the world’s best sketchers working this way. Her previous class for the NJC was Making your Nature Journal Sketches Come Alive\, July 2015. \nNo registration necessary\, All experience levels welcome. Suggested donation $20.

SUMMARY:Perspective for Nature Journaling- Cupertino
DESCRIPTION:Special guest lecture with instructor Mark Simmons\nPerspective allows us to create the illusion of three-dimensional space on the flat page. Though it may seem intimidating\, a basic understanding of perspective gives us a bag of tricks that we can use to add a sense of depth and distance to our scenes\, and convincing volume to our animal drawings. This workshop covers a few simple principles that you can apply to give your pictures a three-dimensional feel\, including: parallel lines and how the eye sees them\, drawing simple forms in perspective\, foreshortening\, overlapping foreground and background\, atmospheric perspective\, and understanding and using the horizon line. \nSan Francisco-based artist Mark Simmons specializes in comics\, cartoons\, and storyboards. You can see some of his work at www.ultimatemark.com\, or visit toysdream.blogspot.com for his latest life sketches of cute animals\, construction machines\, and whatnot. \nNo registration required\, all levels of experience welcome. Bring a sketchbooks and pens or pencils. $20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Sketchnoting: Cupertino
DESCRIPTION:Visual note-taking (aka “sketchnoting”) is a powerful and fun way to capture and remember information and share it effectively. With a set of simple techniques\, you can visually capture key points of a lecture\, video or book\, so that you can quickly recall the ideas and put what you’ve learned into action. Visual notetaking techniques can also be used to record observations in the field and your thinking or explanations for what you see. Whether used as a personal memory tool\, a creative outlet or as a facilitation method for group collaboration\, visual notes are a great way to create memorable\, engaging information summaries. \nIn this hands-on workshop\, you’ll develop a visual vocabulary of symbols\, learn simple lettering techniques\, and get familiar with structuring information into common layout patterns. You’ll bring it all together by capturing visual notes in real time from video\, then get feedback and be inspired with a group critique. \nNo special tools or materials are required for this class. During the session\, you will create your own personal note-taking reference guide. Please bring a journal or sketchbook and your favorite pens and markers. Some additional materials will be provided so that you can experiment! All ages and experience levels welcome. No registration or sign up necessary. $20 suggested donation. \nAbout the Facilitator\nKate Rutter is an entrepreneur and designer and Principal at Intelleto.com\, where she creates visual explanations that make complex ideas simple\, memorable and shareable. SUMMARY:Drawing Trees in Pen and Ink: Cupertino
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to draw broadleaf and evergreen trees both from a distance and up close details (leaves\, acorns\, seed pods\, and fruit). In addition to studying details of structure\, we will explore shortcuts to help you get the form on paper and tricks to suggest dimension and volume. \nTwo advantages of drawing in ink are that it reproduces clearly for low cost printing and that it does not smudge and smear in your notebook. \nWe will apply our new tree drawing expertise in the field trip at the end of this month to Lake Merrit where we will draw trees for an upcoming educational brochure being produced for Oakland Parks and Recreation. This pro bono work is one way we can help conservation education with our art.

SUMMARY:Sketching with Ballpoint Pens
DESCRIPTION:[O]n a recent trip to Rwanda\, I realized that I would fill my sketchbook long before returning home. I usually sketch with soft pencil and leave the opposite page blank so that facing pages will not smear each other. To conserve paper\, I gave up the pencil and started sketching with a ballpoint pen. Within a week I was in love with this new tool and experimenting with ways to get the most out of it. In this workshop I will share what I learned. \n\nDiscover the versatility of ballpoint pens.\nExplore advanced crosshatching techniques.\nLearn what to do when things go wrong with pen. Discover an approach to correcting mistakes or living with the result and moving on.\nWhat do you do when the pen starts to blob and skip?\nExperiment to find the pens that work the best.\n\nRoot through your home and bring all the ballpoints you can find\, even the really cheap ones. We will play with these and find the ones that will work the best for your field sketching. \n$20 suggested donation. \nNo registration required.

SUMMARY:Composition
DESCRIPTION:A strong composition is the backbone of a successful drawing. In addition\, creative composition will open alternative ways of seeing a subject and give you new and exciting avenues to explore in your art. Composition is not hard to master and with a few basic principles under your belt you will see a dramatic improvement in your landscapes\, page layouts\, and photography. In this workshop you will learn ways of visualizing and analyzing your artwork that help you create strong compositions in a single drawing or on the fly as you combine elements on a page. Also learn how to do post-hoc composition to fix the layout of a page or a single sketch.

SUMMARY:The next step: Making your nature drawings come alive
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be taught by the wonderful nature journaler and teacher Laurie Wigham. You’ve been working hard to make sense of the underlying structures: why a bird’s leg seems to bend backward in the middle or how to get the proportions right when you foreshorten those flower petals. It’s time to set aside all the careful measuring and scientific description and go for capturing the joy: the way the flick of a bird’s tail or a tree’s branches reaching for the sun can break your heart open.\nWe’ll be exploring those semi-mystical artist’s concepts of Gesture and The Mark: how the way your arm moves when stroking a pencil over smooth paper will tell a different story than an ink pen skipping and catching on rough paper. We’ll be looking at ways different artists have done this and then will run through a series of exercises so fast there won’t be time to think or get nervous.\nBring a soft pencil and some rough paper if you’ve got them\, but I will also bring materials for everyone to use. Don’t worry about taking notes: I’ll be posting a link to online Flickr galleries of artwork from the presentation so you can take your time looking through it all later

SUMMARY:A Rainbow of Colors from Three Primaries
DESCRIPTION:[Y]ou do not need a palette of a million colors if you understand the way colors mix. There is a lot of misinformation and dogma that confuses people when they try to mix colors. If you have ever accidentally mixed dull or muddy colors\, it is not you. Learn how to create a rainbow of vivid hues and precisely match colors with three primaries (cyan\, magenta\, and yellow). Bring your journal\, waterbrush (or watercolor brush with a container of water and rag)\, and a plant or flower to share. Your instructor\, Kristin Meuser\, will provide the paint ($1.00 materials fee). In this hands on workshop\, you will be able to test and experiment to discover for yourself how color mixing really works and learn to avoid the common pitfalls. Say goodbye to mud and hello precise\, lively\, and rich color. \nKristin Meuser is a wonderful nature journaling and watercolor teacher who gives classes throughout the Bay Area and California. Learn more about Kristin and her workshops. \n

SUMMARY:Two ways of drawing (NJC Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:When I draw\, my brain flickers back and forth between two ways of seeing and thinking about my subject. On one had\, I analyze the structure and play upon my knowledge of anatomy. On the other\, I ignore the structure and attend to what I really see. I break down complex subjects into simple shapes. These may be 2D or 3D depending on the subject or angle. In this workshop we will explore and practice these two ways of seeing and drawing. Bring a sketchbook and pencil and be ready for a hands on workshop together. Invite a friend. This year\, let’s share the experience of journaling with others. No registration required.
