DESCRIPTION:Do you want to get started with using watercolor in your field sketches? This is the class for you. In this workshop I assume no background using watercolors and will cover the essentials to get you started\, so that you can quickly and easily apply watercolor to your work. \nIn this workshop you will learn:\n\nHow to set up your field gear.\nHow to mix colors.\nHow to apply paint using glazing\, wash\, graded wash\, and dry brush techniques.\nHow to avoid the top five mistakes that haunt watercolor artists.\n\nWhat to bring:\n\nA small palette. If you already have one you are good to go. If you are just starting\, read this post. It will give you instructions to assemble a great pallet for under $20. Prep the kit as per the instructions before class. You will be happiest if you dispense with the little white pans as described in the post. If you do not want them\, bring them to class and I will repurpose them.\nA large tip Pentel Aquash Waterbrush. Not the medium\, not the small\, the large one. If you have a waterbrush and it is not this one\, go out and spend the $8 to get this brush. It is well worth the trouble. You can buy one here\, but look around\, you may be able to find a better price.\nA cotton sock with the toe cut off. You do not need to cup up a new sock. Use one of those lonely dryer orphans. DESCRIPTION:Why is water so hard to paint? How do you sketch something that’s always moving? Why can you see the bottom of the lake in one spot\, but the reflected sky right next to it? We’ll talk a little about the science\, look at solutions different artists have used\, develop some strategies for analyzing what we’re seeing and do some simple exercises. SUMMARY:Drawing Birds: getting the details (Tiburon)
DESCRIPTION:When the bird lands in front of you\, you must be ready to get the basic form on paper with a few lines. This was the focus of last month’s workshop which you can view here. But what do you do then? Once you have this basic shape you are ready to fill in the details but this is hard if you don’t understand what you are seeing. One of the keys to fast field sketching is to understand the structures and features of whatever you are looking at\, to know what to expect as the typical way a detail will present\,  and to have a shorthand way to get that down on paper in a few strokes. Understanding the details and having a tool kit of techniques to get them on paper will make field sketching easier\, accurate\, and more fun. \n\nHow do bird beaks fit into the head? Where should I look for nuance of shape?\nHow do you draw the eyes?\nWings- this is a biggie\, how do you suggest the detail without getting lost in a wing diagram (which you actually don’t see on most birds).\nHow does the tail attach and how to simplify the shape and angles?\nHow do I indicate feather texture and groups of feathers?\nWhats up with bird feet and how do I draw them?\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  Homeschool friendly. If you learned that red\, yellow\, and blue are the primary colors you have been sold a bill of goods that is guaranteed to make muddy colors.  Learn a better color triad that will help you easily mix the colors you want when you want em. You don’t have to take my word for it.This will be a hands on workshop. We will mix watercolor\, gouache\, and acrylics\, and play with colored pencils to make our own hues. SUMMARY:Splash and scribble: wet watercolor and aquarelle pencils (Tiburon)
DESCRIPTION:Working with wet watercolor and aquarelle will help your journal sketching become more lively and spontaneous. Instead of carefully drawing lines and then coloring them in\, we’ll invert the process\, splashing down loose watercolor and then drawing into it to define shapes. We’ll also explore some special effects you can get with wet-on-wet watercolor. This approach is very forgiving\, allowing you to feel your way gradually into a drawing\, discovering the scene as you build it up. The class will be mostly hands-on\, with demonstrations and a slideshow showing different ways to use this technique. \nBring \n\n– Scraps of whatever good-quality watercolor paper you can lay your hands on\n– Whatever watercolor paints you usually use\n– A waterbrush (or regular brush and a little jar of water)\n– Any water-soluble pencils you already have (also called aquarelle or watercolor pencils.) If you don’t have any\, buy a couple of neutral gray or brown pencils\, one dark and one mid-value.\n\nIf you can’t lay your hands on all of the above\, there will be materials you can borrow. \nThe class will be taught by Laurie Wigham\, recently returned from the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Manchester where she watched some of the world’s best sketchers working this way. DESCRIPTION:Visual note-taking (aka “sketchnoting”) is a powerful and fun way to capture and remember information and share it effectively. With a set of simple techniques\, you can visually capture key points of a lecture\, video or book\, so that you can quickly recall the ideas and put what you’ve learned into action. Visual notetaking techniques can also be used to record observations in the field and your thinking or explanations for what you see. Whether used as a personal memory tool\, a creative outlet or as a facilitation method for group collaboration\, visual notes are a great way to create memorable\, engaging information summaries. \nIn this hands-on workshop\, you’ll develop a visual vocabulary of symbols\, learn simple lettering techniques\, and get familiar with structuring information into common layout patterns. You’ll bring it all together by capturing visual notes in real time from video\, then get feedback and be inspired with a group critique. \nNo special tools or materials are required for this class. During the session\, you will create your own personal note-taking reference guide. Please bring a journal or sketchbook and your favorite pens and markers. DESCRIPTION:Improve your handwriting with calligrapher and nature journal keeper JP Panter. Learn targeted techniques to improve the problem area that everyone shares. We will learn how to write in italic\, a practical and flexible basic handwriting style which can be either printed or cursive. We will explore how different tools change the look and feel of what you write\, as well as several ways to integrate writing with your sketches and illustrations. If we have time at the end of class we’ll talk a little about traditional calligraphy tools\, and do some testing out of inks and pens.\nNo special tools or materials are required for this class. You will be given photocopy reference materials. Please bring your nature journals to take notes\, and feel free to use any of your favorite pens and pencils. If you happen to have a “broad pen” or a “pointed pen” (the dip in an inkwell kind) and have questions about where to start with it\, feel free to contact JP in advance. \nThis program is free with a $20 suggested donation. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to draw broadleaf and evergreen trees both from a distance and up close details (leaves\, acorns\, seed pods\, and fruit). In addition to studying details of structure\, we will explore shortcuts to help you get the form on paper and tricks to suggest dimension and volume. \nTwo advantages of drawing in ink are that it reproduces clearly for low cost printing and that it does not smudge and smear in your notebook. \nWe will apply our new tree drawing expertise in the field trip at the end of this month to Lake Merrit where we will draw trees for an upcoming educational brochure being produced for Oakland Parks and Recreation. This pro bono work is one way we can help conservation education with our art.

DESCRIPTION:To help call in the rain to drought stricken California\, we offer a special workshop on drawing weather. Learn how to suggest a downpour in graphite pencil and watercolor. We will also draw fog\, snow fields\, and a blizzard. After the storm clears we will learn how to draw raindrops or dew on plants and flowers. \nAs a bonus learn how to draw transparent or translucent objects such as fish eggs and jellyfish (using techniques similar to the raindrop trick). \nThis program is free with a $20 suggested donation. No experience necessary. All ages welcome. Bring a sketchbook and pencil and keep your fingers crossed for rain!
