SUMMARY:Splash and scribble: wet watercolor and aquarelle pencils (Tiburon)
DESCRIPTION:Working with wet watercolor and aquarelle will help your journal sketching become more lively and spontaneous. Instead of carefully drawing lines and then coloring them in\, we’ll invert the process\, splashing down loose watercolor and then drawing into it to define shapes. We’ll also explore some special effects you can get with wet-on-wet watercolor. This approach is very forgiving\, allowing you to feel your way gradually into a drawing\, discovering the scene as you build it up. The class will be mostly hands-on\, with demonstrations and a slideshow showing different ways to use this technique. \nBring \n\n– Scraps of whatever good-quality watercolor paper you can lay your hands on\n– Whatever watercolor paints you usually use\n– A waterbrush (or regular brush and a little jar of water)\n– Any water-soluble pencils you already have (also called aquarelle or watercolor pencils.) If you don’t have any\, buy a couple of neutral gray or brown pencils\, one dark and one mid-value.\n\nIf you can’t lay your hands on all of the above\, there will be materials you can borrow. \nThe class will be taught by Laurie Wigham\, recently returned from the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Manchester where she watched some of the world’s best sketchers working this way. Her previous class for the NJC was Making your Nature Journal Sketches Come Alive\, July 2015. \nNo registration necessary\, All experience levels welcome. Suggested donation $20.

Though it may seem intimidating\, a basic understanding of perspective gives us a bag of tricks that we can use to add a sense of depth and distance to our scenes\, and convincing volume to our animal drawings. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to draw broadleaf and evergreen trees both from a distance and up close details (leaves\, acorns\, seed pods\, and fruit). In addition to studying details of structure\, we will explore shortcuts to help you get the form on paper and tricks to suggest dimension and volume. \nTwo advantages of drawing in ink are that it reproduces clearly for low cost printing and that it does not smudge and smear in your notebook. \nWe will apply our new tree drawing expertise in the field trip at the end of this month to Lake Merrit where we will draw trees for an upcoming educational brochure being produced for Oakland Parks and Recreation. This pro bono work is one way we can help conservation education with our art.

I usually sketch with soft pencil and leave the opposite page blank so that facing pages will not smear each other. To conserve paper\, I gave up the pencil and started sketching with a ballpoint pen. Within a week I was in love with this new tool and experimenting with ways to get the most out of it. In this workshop I will share what I learned. \n\nDiscover the versatility of ballpoint pens.\nExplore advanced crosshatching techniques.\nLearn what to do when things go wrong with pen. Discover an approach to correcting mistakes or living with the result and moving on.\nWhat do you do when the pen starts to blob and skip?\nExperiment to find the pens that work the best.\n\nRoot through your home and bring all the ballpoints you can find\, even the really cheap ones. SUMMARY:Colored Pencils For Field Sketching
DESCRIPTION:Colored pencils are a terrific and easy to use tools for drawing in nature. Learn how to get the most of a small set of colored pencils and create a fast\, portable\, intuitive\, and inexpensive sketching system. Learn how to apply and combine colors to create rich hues and smooth gradients. Learn to choose colors and use complementary color underpainting to create rich and natural shadows. \nSupplies\n\nsketchbook (paper with a little tooth is best not super smooth)\na small set of colored pencils such as the Prismacolor Primer 24 pencil set\nadditional pencils including the following Prismacolor Primer pencils: Black Grape\, Grayed Lavender\, Process Red\, True Blue\, Canary Yellow\, white\, and a colorless blender (a special Prismacolor pencil that is all wax and no pigment). Also pick out a few muted and dull tan\, brown\, green\, and light gray pencils (you will find you reach for these a lot)\na pencil-case\nfive or six rubber bands\nSmall Kemper Double Ball Stylus (Item code DBSS). If you are not able to find this\, bring a dead fine point ball point pen (this should be completely dry with NO wet ink inside)\na hand-held pencil sharpener and a little bag to catch the scraps of pencil shavings.

DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of mammal anatomy that are relevant for the field sketcher. Discover how subtle differences in skeletal structure make big changes the way an animal looks. Learn a few critical muscles that are prominent beneath the fur. Discover tricks for suggesting the feel and depth of fur without drawing in every hair. We will pay particular attention to and learn tricks to quickly draw large ungulates such as deer and elk in preparation for our Point Reyes field trip.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Calligraphy
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join J.P. Panter in a playful pen session on adding calligraphy to your sketchbook work. She will demonstrate techniques in traditional dip-pen calligraphy\, have handouts on varying letterforms\, and have a number of modern pens to try-before-you-buy in class. In addition to hands-on work time\, she will have a short digital slide show that touches briefly on design elements\, how calligraphy can add to\, or become the focus of your work\, show samples of both illuminated letters and modern calligraphic works in contrast\, and for inspiration. \nAs always bring your curiosity and journaling items with you to try your hand at adding elegant writing (or maybe just a single awesome capital letter) to your note taking\, poem making and sketchbooking world. \nWhat to Bring\nYour sketchbook / nature journal\, a pencil\, your favorite pens and pencils for\nmaking notes\, paper towel and a small water container.\n*If you already own; a pointed pen (and nibs)\, speedball pen (nibs or no nibs)\,\nPilot Parallel pen or what you think might be a traditional calligraphy pen\, please feel free to bring it with you. I can show you how to use them\, how to clean them\, and what letterforms they write and which ink to buy.\nAnd- a plate\, spoon and a potluck treat to share. \nAbout J.P.\nJ.P. Panter is a BANJC member and Bay Area illustrator / calligrapher. She specializes in pointed pen calligraphy and is known for her flourishing (traditional birds and animals in pointed pen) and luxury wedding & winery work in Napa Valley. In 2013 her work has been published in Martha Stewart Weddings and Modern Luxury Brides magazines. In addition to illustrating\, wine label design and wedding work\, she teaches private handwriting lessons for children and develops signature writing for business professionals.
