DESCRIPTION:In preparation for our Hawk Hill adventure\, let’s focus on how to draw soaring raptors. Learn relevant wing anatomy and the differences between the major groups of hawks. We will explore how to quickly block in flying hawks with a few lines. Get tricks to help you foreshorten the wings of soaring raptors and develop an understanding of how the bird’s shape will change from different angles. Bring a sketchbook and a pair of scissors. \nBonus: participants will receive a raptor model to help them master foreshortening and wing angles before our field trip. \nNote: Due to the goverment shutdown the class will be held in the SF Zoo this month instead of the Presidio

DESCRIPTION:Raptor migration season has started in the Bay Area. Over the next several months\, birds of prey will be flooding through our area and stopping to catch a snack on the way. At rest\, raptors make great subjects to draw. Learning some of the basics of their anatomy\, proportions\, patterns and ecology will help you accurately and quickly draw them in the field. Join us for this free workshop step up your hawk and eagle drawings. \nWe will also explore fast sketching techniques on toned paper. Bring a white Prismacolor pencil and a piece of toned gray or brown paper\, see description of toned paper here.

DESCRIPTION:Learn techniques for fast field sketching. Some drawing tools allow you to easily create tone and values without a lot of fussing around. If you like the look and feel of one of these techniques\, consider incorperating these tools into your sketching kit. Jack will demonstrate techniques using:soft graphite pencil and blending tool (egret demonstration) \n\n\nsoft graphite pencil and blending tool (egret demonstration)\nPrismacolor Premier Marker-warm grey 10\, 40 and 60% (oak woodland demonstration)\nwater soluble pencil and waterbrush (deer demonstration)\nwater soluble pen and waterbrush (wildflower demonstration)\nPrismacolor "Black Grape" pencil (conifer forest demonstration)\ntoned paper\, soft pencil\, and white Prismacolor pencil (gull demonstration)\n\nIf you want to follow along with the demonstrations\, you may want to bring your sketchbook and a dark prismacolor pencil (such as Black Grape)\, a soft graphite pencil (2B or darker) and a blending tool (stomp or tortillion)\, a dark Derwent water soluble pencil\, a water soluble pen such as a Razor Point\, a set of 3 warm grey Prismacolor Premier Markers 10\, 40 and 60%\, a waterbrush\, a few pieces of gray toned paper\, and a white Prismacolor pencil. Check your drawing kit and bring them if you have them. We can share during the workshop if enough folks bring these tools. Then if you like something you see\, you can purchase it after the class at your favorite art supply store. SUMMARY:Journal Workshop: How to assemble the perfect nature journal kit
DESCRIPTION:When you hit the trail for a day of nature journaling\, you want to have all your favorite items at your fingertips. The more accessible you make your journal kit\, the more likely you will be to get it out and use it. If your journal is buried somewhere in your backpack and it is a hassle to get it out\, it is easy to say to yourself\, "Oh well\, I will draw the next bird". You can go like this all day and never get it out!  \nEveryone's kit will be different. We all have our favorite tools and materials. Your kit will be a balance between having the equipment you need and the inconvenience of extra weight and clutter. Bring your favorite materials and field sketching supplies. We will evaluate different systems and help your perfect your kit for you. \nWe will also explore some field sketching logistics such as how to hold your journal while you sketch outdoors\, how to juggle binoculars\, pencil\, journal and other supplies\, dealing with wind\, and the nature journal quick-draw. \nYou can view a list of some of my favorite nature journal supplies and can order some materials from my store. Some supplies will be available for purchase at the workshop such as journal kit shoulder bags\, waterbrushes\, and compact binoculars.
