SUMMARY:Drawing Birds: getting the details (Fremont)
DESCRIPTION:When the bird lands in front of you\, you must be ready to get the basic form on paper with a few lines. This was the focus of last month’s workshop which you can view here. But what do you do then? Once you have this basic shape you are ready to fill in the details but this is hard if you don’t understand what you are seeing. One of the keys to fast field sketching is to understand the structures and features of whatever you are looking at\, to know what to expect as the typical way a detail will present\,  and to have a shorthand way to get that down on paper in a few strokes. Understanding the details and having a tool kit of techniques to get them on paper will make field sketching easier\, accurate\, and more fun. \n\nHow do bird beaks fit into the head? Where should I look for nuance of shape?\nHow do you draw the eyes?\nWings- this is a biggie\, how do you suggest the detail without getting lost in a wing diagram (which you actually don’t see on most birds).\nHow does the tail attach and how to simplify the shape and angles?\nHow do I indicate feather texture and groups of feathers?\nWhats up with bird feet and how do I draw them?\n\nAll ages and experience levels are welcome.  Homeschool friendly. No registration necessary\, \n$20 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Sandhill Cranes: Using shape\, structure\, and light to draw what you see (Fremont)
DESCRIPTION:[T]his workshop is not about drawing Sandhill Cranes. It is about how your ability to draw anything improves when you understand what you see and train your eye to capture critical negative shapes\, gestures\,  and angles. We will start with a detailed look “under the hood” of the Sandhill Crane so we all have  a rich understanding of the anatomy and structure. Then we will learn how to make fast gesture lines from moving birds and how to fill these out to completed sketches. We will also explore how to escape from your understanding of what you “should see”  to accept what you do see and get that down on paper. This approach is not just a technique for drawing cranes\, it applies broadly to any subject you may wish to draw \nThis program is free with a $20 suggested donation. No registration necessary. All levels of experience welcome. Bring a journal and pencil. \n

SUMMARY:Splash and scribble: wet watercolor and aquarelle pencils (Fremont)
DESCRIPTION:Working with wet watercolor and aquarelle will help your journal sketching become more lively and spontaneous. Instead of carefully drawing lines and then coloring them in\, we’ll invert the process\, splashing down loose watercolor and then drawing into it to define shapes. We’ll also explore some special effects you can get with wet-on-wet watercolor. This approach is very forgiving\, allowing you to feel your way gradually into a drawing\, discovering the scene as you build it up. The class will be mostly hands-on\, with demonstrations and a slideshow showing different ways to use this technique. \nBring \n\n– Scraps of whatever good-quality watercolor paper you can lay your hands on\n– Whatever watercolor paints you usually use\n– A waterbrush (or regular brush and a little jar of water)\n– Any water-soluble pencils you already have (also called aquarelle or watercolor pencils.) If you don’t have any\, buy a couple of neutral gray or brown pencils\, one dark and one mid-value.\n\nIf you can’t lay your hands on all of the above\, there will be materials you can borrow. \nThe class will be taught by Laurie Wigham\, recently returned from the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Manchester where she watched some of the world’s best sketchers working this way. Her previous class for the NJC was Making your Nature Journal Sketches Come Alive\, July 2015. \nNo registration necessary\, All experience levels welcome. Suggested donation $20.

SUMMARY:Perspective for Nature Journaling- Fremont
DESCRIPTION:Special guest lecture with instructor Mark Simmons\nPerspective allows us to create the illusion of three-dimensional space on the flat page. Though it may seem intimidating\, a basic understanding of perspective gives us a bag of tricks that we can use to add a sense of depth and distance to our scenes\, and convincing volume to our animal drawings. This workshop covers a few simple principles that you can apply to give your pictures a three-dimensional feel\, including: parallel lines and how the eye sees them\, drawing simple forms in perspective\, foreshortening\, overlapping foreground and background\, atmospheric perspective\, and understanding and using the horizon line. \nSan Francisco-based artist Mark Simmons specializes in comics\, cartoons\, and storyboards. You can see some of his work at www.ultimatemark.com\, or visit toysdream.blogspot.com for his latest life sketches of cute animals\, construction machines\, and whatnot. \nNo registration required\, all levels of experience welcome. SUMMARY:No-fear Watercolor Techniques for Field Journaling -Fremont
DESCRIPTION:Watercolors are a fast and versatile way to get color into your sketchbook or journal. But many of us have been frustrated with the mechanics of getting our paint to do what we want or watched a sketch drown in a puddle of murky brown paint. Have you been frustrated by your watercolors when field sketching? Does your kit consistently make a muddy mess (when you don’t want it to)? Good news- there are ways you can learn to use your paint that make it much easier to manage and control in the field. Learn a bag of tricks and techniques to make your watercolor experience fun\, fast\, and successful.
