DESCRIPTION:Do you want to get started with using watercolor in your field sketches? This is the class for you. In this workshop I assume no background using watercolors and will cover the essentials to get you started\, so that you can quickly and easily apply watercolor to your work. \nIn this workshop you will learn:\n\nHow to set up your field gear.\nHow to mix colors.\nHow to apply paint using glazing\, wash\, graded wash\, and dry brush techniques.\nHow to avoid the top five mistakes that haunt watercolor artists.\n\nWhat to bring:\n\nA small palette. If you already have one you are good to go. If you are just starting\, read this post. It will give you instructions to assemble a great pallet for under $20. Prep the kit as per the instructions before class. You will be happiest if you dispense with the little white pans as described in the post. If you do not want them\, bring them to class and I will repurpose them.\nA large tip Pentel Aquash Waterbrush. Not the medium\, not the small\, the large one. If you have a waterbrush and it is not this one\, go out and spend the $8 to get this brush. It is well worth the trouble. You can buy one here\, but look around\, you may be able to find a better price.\nA cotton sock with the toe cut off. You do not need to cup up a new sock. Use one of those lonely dryer orphans. If you can not find one\, I have a used but clean sock for you.  Now that is generosity!\n\nThis class will be held in room SM36 at West Valley College. The closest parking lot is lot #2. SUMMARY:Reflections and other tricky things about water (Saratoga)
DESCRIPTION:Why is water so hard to paint? How do you sketch something that’s always moving? Why can you see the bottom of the lake in one spot\, but the reflected sky right next to it? We’ll talk a little about the science\, look at solutions different artists have used\, develop some strategies for analyzing what we’re seeing and do some simple exercises. Bring your usual sketching kit and paper to take notes. Watercolor is useful but not essential. \nLaurie Wigham is a painter in San Francisco. She organizes the SF Sketchers meetup group and teaches sometimes. Her previous classes for the Nature Journal Club were “Splash & Scribble” and  “Making your Nature Journal Sketches Come Alive”. SUMMARY:Drawing Birds: getting the details (Saratoga)
DESCRIPTION:When the bird lands in front of you\, you must be ready to get the basic form on paper with a few lines. This was the focus of last month’s workshop which you can view here. But what do you do then? Once you have this basic shape you are ready to fill in the details but this is hard if you don’t understand what you are seeing. One of the keys to fast field sketching is to understand the structures and features of whatever you are looking at\, to know what to expect as the typical way a detail will present\,  and to have a shorthand way to get that down on paper in a few strokes. Understanding the details and having a tool kit of techniques to get them on paper will make field sketching easier\, accurate\, and more fun. \n\nHow do bird beaks fit into the head? Where should I look for nuance of shape?\nHow do you draw the eyes?\nWings- this is a biggie\, how do you suggest the detail without getting lost in a wing diagram (which you actually don’t see on most birds).\nHow does the tail attach and how to simplify the shape and angles?\nHow do I indicate feather texture and groups of feathers?\nWhats up with bird feet and how do I draw them?\n\nThis class will be held in room SM36 at West Valley College. SUMMARY:Santa Clara Wildflower Show Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join the Nature Journal Club at the Santa Clara Valley Wildflower Show.\nWildflower Shows are incredible events. For days before\, teams of botanists scour the Bay Area and beyond for fresh specimens of wildflowers. These they bring to one room\, all labeled and organized. You can easily compare species side by side and become a wildflower ninja in no time! The show will feature hundreds of species of wildflowers and native plants.  Expert botanists and gardeners will be on site to describe different samples and answer questions. With the heavy rain this winter\, we are expecting a prolific bloom of Northern California wildflowers. \nBring a stool and you can sit down and draw and paint all the species you want to remember. This is an amazing opportunity for nature journalers. \nThe Nature Journal Club will attend the show on Saturday when the specimens are fresh. We will sketch throughout the morning. I will lead a workshop on drawing wildflowers  in the Auditorium (time to be announced). We will enjoy a potluck lunch together and celebrate our friendship with a gift exchange. The program is open to all ages and ability levels. No registration necessary. Wheelchair accessable. $20 suggested donation. \nThe show will be held in the Biology wing of the West Valley College Science and Math buildings\, which parallels Allendale Avenue. Parking is free in West Valley lots 1 and 2 (large). \nBirthday Gift Exchange\nIt is almost my Birthday and I want to party with you.
