Nature Journal Educator’s Forum: Numbers…
August 12 @ 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm PDT

Numbers help ourselves and our students think quantitatively and to see patterns that we otherwise would overlook. What are our best strategies for incorporating numbers into our nature journaling? What considerations do we make to help our students with dyscalcula?
Today we will be joined by Gitana (Zaria) Garofalo who will share some of her experiences and insights as a person with dyscalula.
Here are some resoruces Zarina thought would be useful to review before the discussion.

About Zarina
Gitana (Zaria) Garofalo learned about her dyscalcula as an adult and now seeks to help normalize and positivize the condition. She has a Master of Arts in Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Seattle University and recently retired from an academic advising career at the University of Washington. In 2025, she completed a fellowship in Aotearoa New Zealand where she focused on social-group pathways to activate and sustain meaningful human-nature symbiotic relations. Zaria lives in the traditional worlds of the Coast Salish peoples—past, present, future—to whom she offers her acknowledgement and gratitude. Also, she honors the living entities of Land, Air, Water, and beyond-human Life from whom we originate and to whom we are inherently connected and relationally accountable. Zaria loves contemporary poetry, walking shelter dogs, and subalpine hiking.
