Black Diamond Mines Field Trip
September 27, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm$20
Join the Nature Journal Club for an exploration of Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve near Antioch. We will explore composition and mini landscapes as we investigate the oak woodlands and grasslands of the park. Bring a potluck treat to share for lunch and your own bowl and spoon. Lunch can stay in the car while we explore and sketch all morning.
At 2:pm we have reserved a 1.5 hour tour of the old coal mines. This tour is restricted to 15 people. If you would like to take part, we will have a sign-up sheet in the parking lot when we meet. If the tour is filled before you can sign up, there may be walk in slots available for a tour at 11:00 AM (we will start lunch at 12:30 so people on that tour will not miss our potluck lunch).
- From CA 4 in Contra Costa County exit Somersville Road (exit 26a eastbound/26 westbound). Drive south on Somersville to the park entrance.
- If you’re driving from San Francisco, or the south bay, these directions may make your trip quicker (or at least more pleasant): from the CA 24/Interstate 680 interchange in Contra Costa County, exit Ygnacio Valley Road (exit 46b). Drive east on Ygnacio Valley Road about 8 miles, then the road changes into Kirker Pass. Continue about 5 miles on Kirker Pass to the junction with Buchanan. Turn right and drive about 3 miles to Somersville Road. Turn right and drive to the park entrance.
