Knowland Park Field Trip
May 24, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm$20
Join the Nature Journal Club for a ramble in Oakland’s Knowland Park. Tucked into the Oakland hills, this park has tremendous diversity and is an oasis of nature. A great place to practice your botanical illustrations and look for migrating birds. We can leave our potluck lunch treats (and spoon and bowl) in our cars while we hike in the morning, we will be back by the cars around lunch.
DIRECTIONS: The scenic way to KP: Take the Golf Links Rd/98th Street Exit from 580. Drive past the zoo entrance on your right, and continue up Golf Links Rd, enjoy the woodsy drive through KP. As you enter the residential area again, take your first Right onto Caloden Rd.; take a sharp Right curve onto Malcolm Avenue; as you approach the top of Malcolm Ave, there are 4 short Dead End streets on the right that end at the edge of KP (Ettrick, Lochard, Cameron and Snowdon). These are the main entrances to KP.
Park on Ettrick, Lochard, Cameron, and Snowdon, or on Malcolm Avenue or on a side street on the other side of Malcolm Ave. Please be careful not to obstruct traffic, or the residents’ walkways or driveways.
RENDEZVOUS SPOT FOR MAY 24TH FIELD TRIP: Meet in KP at the Cameron Avenue entrance, off Malcolm Avenue.
BATHROOM FACILITIES: Knowland Park is a public wild, natural open space with NO bathroom facilities, Friends of Knowland Park will provide a Porta-Potty, most likely at the Cameron Ave entrance for our use.
Friends of Knowland Park will have a welcome table at the Rendezvous spot, & will offer our Nature Trail Guides of KP. We will divide into three or four groups and join Friends of Knowland Park volunteers on a one hour tour to see the highlight spots and species of KP.
We will meet back near the Cameron entrance around noon for our potluck lunch. There are not trash cans so be prepared to pack out any trash to leave the park cleaner than we found it.
After lunch we will return to our favorite spots to sketch and explore.
