Nature Journal Fieldtrip- the Gardens of Alcatraz
July 30 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Discover the revitalized beauty of the gardens of Alcatraz.
The Gardens of Alcratraz open to the Nature Journal Club for a special tour and day of sketching. We meet early on the docks and take the staff ferry across the bay (cost of ferry ride covered) to arrive on the island before the crowds. We will then make our way to the island gardens where we will get a special tour of the history and horticultural highlights from Lynn Makowsky , a representative of the Gardens of Alcatraz Program run by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. Then we will dig into our journals. John Muir Laws will give a botanical illustration demonstration mid morning. At noon we will share our work and a potluck lunch (bring your bowl, spoon, and something to share in your backpack). After lunch we will return to sketching and journaling around the island. Join John Muir Laws or other sketchers to pick up tricks and insights on keeping your own nature journal. We will reconvene to share our work at 3:30 at the docks before boarding the ferry to return home. If you would like to leave earlier (or stay later), boats leave every thirty minutes.
The program is open to all ages and ability levels. $20 suggested donation.
Registrations are required. We will only be able to bring 30 people on our early ferry to the island. If you would like to join us please RSVP here. Space is limited. If you sign up and decide not to attend, please cancel to reopen your space on the boat. Register here.
There are a few parking lots across the street from Pier 33. There is one on the corner of Bay and Embarcadero. There is another at 55 Francisco st and a third called Waterfront Plaza lot #55. Be aware that prices for parking in this area can vary greatly, as little as $8-10 for all day, to as high as $6 an hour. It is even better to take public transportation when possible. Muni and/or BART will probably be the easiest and definitely cheapest way to get here. Bike racks are available at the terminal.
