Plankton, Seabirds, and the best view of the Bay (Journaling Fieldtrip)

June 2, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm PDT

Experience the foundation of marine ecosystems on a beautiful pier by the bay.

At the end of a pier at Crissy Field is a small building (once a part of a lifeboat station) that now holds a heated microscope lab. This is a research and education facility of the NOAA Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. We will take plankton tows off the pier and then study our little friends under the scopes and through a plankton projector on the wall. Learn tricks and techniques to help you draw plankton and other transparent microscopic animals in an illustrated lecture. If plankton is not your thing, you can study the seabirds perched on nearby pilings or enjoy the spectacular view of the bay from the pier. Lunch is a potluck so bring a treat to share and your own bowl and spoon. Check the program description Sunday morning before leaving for updates and changes. The program is open to all ages and ability levels. No registration necessary. $20 suggested donation.

Meet by the whale sculpture on the lawn in front of the Sanctuary office.

Suggested additional equipment”

  • Mid value toned paper
  • Colored pencils (including white)
