Orcas! Art and Conservation

August 27, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm PDT

Join John Muir Laws and Jenny Atkinson from The Whale Museum. In this workshop, you will learn about the amazing lifestyles of resident orca, including conservation and what we can do to protect the whales.  You will also learn how to draw orca as they breach, breathe, spyhop, and wave their tails.

Located in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, WA state, The Whale Museum opened to the public in July of 1979. It is the first museum in the country devoted to a living species in the wild. The charismatic megafauna we focus on the most is the orca, specifically the Southern Resident Community of Orcas, a population listed as endangered in the US and Canada (their range extends from Monterey, CA to SE Alaska and the entire Salish Sea, the inland waters of BC and WA). The museum’s mission is to promote stewardship of whales and the Salish Sea ecosystem through education & research. They are a small museum, with a big mission! A private non-profit organization with an Exhibit Hall, in-house and outreach education, as well as a variety of research programs.

This live workshop can hold 500 people. I will also make a recording of the workshop and post it on my blog. All ages and experience levels are welcome. I look forward to seeing you there!

The Whale Museum is facing financial hardship during the COVID epidemic. I encourage you to donate to support the museum. If you are not able to donate at this time, no problem–please continue to enjoy the classes and find another way to pay it forward in your community with acts of kindness and service. Thank you!

Bring

  • Your Journal and favorite drawing materials. Taking notes while you watch and participate will help you remember the new techniques and incorporate them into your journaling.
  • Your sense of humor!

Barring technical difficulties, all classes are recorded and posted for free on the blog. It often takes several days.
