
If you made your illustration on stipple paper, begin to shade the leaf one vein-section at a time. Use a black Prismacolor or Faber Castell pencil, not a graphite pencil.

Is it because a graphite pencil can smear and smudge?
Two things- graphite pencil makes a gray tone instead of black and it smudges more easily than wax based colored pencils.
